Tabs landed in 3.58.0 last week, and the feedback that came back was detailed, direct and genuinely useful — this release is mostly the result of it. Sorry for the back and forth it took to get there, the Workspace Apps launcher in particular: it moved to the left of the titlebar in 3.58.0 and moves back to the right here. Thank you for bearing with it, and please keep the feedback coming.

Changed

• Settings… → Workspace Apps → Open Behavior is now Mode: Tabs (default) or New Windows. Your setting carries over.
  • New Windows opens every app in its own window and hides the tab sidebar. Tabs already open stay open.
  • Background Tab is no longer a default — hold Cmd on macOS, Ctrl on Windows/Linux while clicking. Anyone who had it set lands on Tabs.
• The Workspace Apps launcher is back on the right of the titlebar, with a new Launcher Display option
  • Auto (default) shows one button per app up to three, and collapses into one beyond that. Collapsed and Expanded pin it either way.
• The launcher and bookmarks buttons move into the tab sidebar while it's visible, and back to the titlebar when it hides
• Settings… → Appearance → Vertical Tabs moved to Settings… → Workspace Apps → Vertical Tabs, next to the Mode switch. Same options.
• Open in App now governs every way an app opens — launcher, links, pinned tabs at launch, reopened tabs, New … Tab and Duplicate. Off means your default browser, and changing it asks for a restart.
• Bookmarks are saved as URLs rather than flags on a tab, so one reopens where it was saved instead of wherever you browsed to. Existing bookmarks are converted automatically.
• Google My Account opens as a tab like any other app instead of its own window

Added

• Meru Pro: Notifications from Workspace Apps — Calendar reminders and Chat messages now arrive as native notifications, where before they simply never appeared
  • On by default, at Settings… → Notifications → Workspace Apps
  • Titled by app, prefixed with the account label when you have more than one: [Work] Calendar
  • Clicking one activates the tab it came from, switching account if needed
  • Calendar's are silent, since Calendar plays its own sound
  • Calendar's Snooze button and app icons aren't carried over
• Meru Pro: Open <App> Links in This Tab in a tab's context menu sends every link to that app into that tab, the way Gmail already works
  • One tab per app — designating a second asks first and names the tab that loses it
  • Marked in the sidebar; Vertical Tabs → Show App Links Badge (on) hides the mark, not the behavior
  • Kept across restarts on pinned tabs, for the session on unpinned ones
• Bookmarks have a proper home: a titlebar button — or one at the foot of the tab sidebar while it's visible — opens a popup listing the account's bookmarks
  • Bookmark the current page with the star on a tab row, in a Workspace App window's titlebar, or from the tab's context menu. It fills while the page is bookmarked and empties as you browse on.
  • Drag rows to reorder, ✕ on hover to remove
• Meru Pro: A width button at the foot of the tab sidebar switches it between narrow and wide
  • It lasts for this run of the app on that account and leaves your Width setting alone; Reset Width in the sidebar's context menu hands it back
  • Vertical Tabs → Show Width Button (on) hides it
• Meru Pro: Vertical Tabs → Show Windows (on) lists apps open in their own window in the sidebar, where clicking one brings its window forward
• Meru Pro: Vertical Tabs → Hide Unread Badge When Active (off) drops Gmail's unread count from its tab while you're on it. The attention icon still shows.
• The tab sidebar scrolls once it fills, keeping the controls at its foot reachable. Pinned and open tabs scroll separately, and pinned tabs can't squeeze the open ones below three rows.
• Close the current tab with Cmd+Shift+W on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+W on Windows/Linux. Cmd/Ctrl+W still closes the window.
• Jump to a pinned tab with Ctrl+Shift+1–9, Gmail counting as the first
• Load on Launch is now in a Workspace App window's More Options menu, reaching New Windows mode

Fixed

• Sheets, Slides and Forms all showed up as Docs — they share docs.google.com and were told apart by domain alone. Each now gets its own icon, title, zoom level and Open in App exclusion.
  • Bookmarks saved before this update keep their Docs icon until saved again
• Presenting in Slides and going fullscreen in Meet now work, and the page covers the titlebar and tab sidebar instead of leaving them on screen
• Workspace Apps were told notifications were allowed even with the setting off, so pages showed no blocked state while their notifications went nowhere. Permissions Meru didn't handle also never settled, leaving pages waiting forever.
• Picking an audio output device in Google Meet now works
• Windows/Linux: new-mail notifications never showed the email summary and the Show Summary switch wasn't offered. It now sits below the subject, with the switch to turn it off.
• Verification-code auto-copy only scanned what the notification displayed, so turning off Show Subject or Show Summary could stop it working. It reads the whole email now.
• Quitting with the bookmarks or recent downloads popup open could hang the app
