NFS Carbon NX 1.0.0 (Standard Edition)
The first non-beta release. Need for Speed: Carbon (Xbox 360) running natively on the Nintendo Switch. This is not an
emulator: the game's code is translated to C++ and its GPU commands are drawn by a native Vulkan renderer.
You need your own game files and a CPU overclock (reference: CPU 1428 / GPU 768 / memory 1600 MHz). At stock
handheld clocks it is too slow and the audio stutters.
What's new since 0.1.0-beta.8
- Much less audio stutter. The audio output never refilled its cushion after a gap, so every small hiccup of the mixer
became silence. It refills now, and the mixer thread runs above the XMA and GPU threads. In race wars most windows have no
missing audio data; before, nearly every race window had 50 to 410 audio requests without data per 10 seconds. - Bloom is on by default, and the picture is much better for it (
carbon_gpu_bloom = falsesaves about 4 ms of GPU
time per frame). The pause menu background also works with bloom off. - Car reflection pass refreshed every 30 frames instead of being skipped for good.
- DLC fixes. A stale install journal could hide all DLC; install work folders could not be deleted on the SD card;
a pack present in two folders was installed twice. At most 30 packs are now listed to the game (36 and 52 packs crashed
the profile load, 30 ran a long session). - Collector's Edition support ships as its own beta release,
v1.0.0-collectors-beta.1.
Performance
Measured on one Switch in handheld mode at 1428 / 768 / 1600 MHz, scene at 80% upscaled with FSR:
- Race wars (13 to 16 cars): median 31 FPS, 62% of the time at 30 FPS or more, lowest 18.7.
- Open roads and lighter races: 40 to 55 FPS.
Details and the older sessions: docs/PERFORMANCE.md.
Known issues
- Audio can still crackle for a few seconds at a heavy race start.
- Black patches next to a washed-out road can appear at 120 to 150 km/h while the motion blur or tunnel vision effect is on.
Cause unknown. - Below the reference clocks, audio drop-outs and low frame rates are likely.
- Achievements are not confirmed.
Full list: docs/KNOWN_ISSUES.md. If you send an issue report, I will address it. Steps for a useful report are in the README.
Install
Copy nfscarbon.nro and nfscarbon.toml to sdmc:/switch/nfscarbon/, together with your own game-data/ folder
(default.xex, NFS/, Movies/). Launch with title override (hold R). Put DLC packs (30 at most) in dlc/.
- Expected
default.xexSHA-256:947f95c7306eabf5bc72972938df57a922798bafbc02edf1a9107f0462c721e1
(USA / NTSC-U release; other regions are untested). nfscarbon.report.tomlis the full-logging config for performance reports. Use it for one session and then put
nfscarbon.tomlback.
No game files are included, and none ever will be. Use dumps of original discs you own.
