Steadier frame times with Smooth motion and on Windows, a new Weather setting, and an experimental option to render on a second processor core.
Updating on Windows: replace every file of the old copy, not only the .exe.
Fixed
- Stutter at camera cuts with Smooth motion. When a moment can't be blended (a camera cut, a new scene), its in-between picture was left out, so the picture before stayed on screen twice as long. That picture is now shown again at the in-between moment, so pictures keep coming at an even pace. 1% lows in fights went up by about a quarter on our machines (for example 41 → 52 at 60 on an RTX 5080 at 6×).
BT3_INTERP_NOREPEAT=1brings back the old behaviour. - Uneven frame pacing on Windows. Windows 11 can slow down a game's timers to save power, and the wait for the next picture could overshoot by a millisecond or more. The game now asks Windows not to throttle it, and waits with a high-resolution timer.
- The "Low input lag" tooltip said it doesn't work with Smooth motion. It does: with both on, the in-between picture follows your press almost at once and the full picture one refresh later (about 27 ms faster than Smooth motion alone, measured).
New
- Weather (F1 → Effects). The faint haze of dust, snow or cloud drifting over some stages (Desert, Rocky Field, Kami's Lookout, Glacier, Muscle Tower, Time Chamber). It costs a surprising amount on weaker graphics chips, so you can now turn it off, or set it to Light (half of it). Only what you see changes, not the fight, so it's fine online.
- Render on a second processor core (F1 → Video, experimental, off by default, takes effect after a restart). The picture is prepared and shown on a core of its own while the game computes the next moment. It can help where the processor is the slow part (older or low-power machines): 31% more pictures a second on a fast PC when nothing limits it. On a machine that already keeps up you won't notice a difference. Same picture, same game, and no added input lag (measured). Not used with the OpenGL renderer or on machines with two cores or fewer. If your game is slow or stutters, please try it and tell us whether it helped. If anything goes wrong, untick it again.
Faster
- Outlines are drawn only where there is a line, instead of over the whole picture: 4–8% faster at 3× on an integrated GPU, with the same picture.
