Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.8.1

latest release: 1.1.0-nt.8.2

Nuvio Arc is my experimental fork of Nuvio for trying new ideas, not a replacement for the official app. It runs on the same boxes and works best on stronger ones. It's a one-person hobby project: report problems or ideas in this repo's Issues (best effort) or at r/NuvioForks, and please don't report issues from this build to the official Nuvio GitHub or Discord.

An update on top of Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.8, still built on official NuvioTV 1.1.0-beta.8. It installs over nt.8 and keeps all your settings.

Night mode on nt.8 turned effects and bass down along with the loud scenes, so films sounded flat and quiet. It now only lifts the quiet moments. This release also keeps playback going when TorBox says "too many requests", brings frame rate matching back in line with the official app for 25 and 30 fps video, stops slow addons such as AIOStreams from coming back empty, gets the badges under the player title to show far more of your badge pack, and adds a DTS-HD setting for Arc running on a TV with a soundbar.

New

  • Confirm with OK, a fourth Seeking choice. In Settings > Playback > Player Interface > Seeking. Left and right only move the marker and its thumbnail while the film waits where it is, and the film only jumps when you press OK; Back cancels. It works paused or playing, with ExoPlayer or MPV, with or without thumbnails, so finding a spot no longer means rebuffering on every press. Holding a key glides at the Balanced speeds, and a seek left alone for 15 seconds is dropped and the film carries on where it was. (#71)
  • DTS-HD and DTS:X on TVs with a soundbar. Running Arc on a TV with a soundbar or receiver on HDMI ARC or eARC? A new DTS-HD and DTS:X passthrough setting (Settings > Playback > Audio) lets the TV pass DTS-HD and DTS:X on instead of Arc, for TVs that show plain DTS or play nothing. It only shows on a TV, boxes are unchanged, and TrueHD and other formats work as before. (#27)
  • Device assessment and Automatic speed-up work together. With Automatic speed-up on, the assessment now suggests Connections: Automatic, and applying it leaves Automatic speed-up in charge instead of setting a fixed number of connections that quietly switched it off.

Better

  • Automatic speed-up remembers the piece size that worked for each server, so the next film from that server starts on it straight away instead of working it out again over the first few minutes. Slow-answering services such as Real-Debrid gain the most. 2 GB boxes keep their limits.
  • 4K thumbnails pick a lighter copy. When a 4K film's thumbnails come from a smaller copy, a 720p or 1080p WEB copy now comes before a 1080p disc remux. A remux's keyframes are four to five times bigger for the same thumbnail, so thumbnails finish sooner on slower links.

Fixed

  • Steadier playback when TorBox says "too many requests". When TorBox refused, Arc retried every piece on its own a few times in quick succession and then gave up on it, and the pieces it gave up on sat there until the player reached them, so load errors piled up and the buffer ran dry. Now all pieces wait together, one request checks in now and then (after 2, 4, 8 and then every 15 seconds), and everything carries on as soon as TorBox answers again. (#8)
  • Night mode lifts quiet moments instead of turning loud ones down. On nt.8 it cut the bass even on Light and drowned out effects on Strong, and typical dialogue got quieter too. Now quiet scenes and soft speech come up (by up to 6 dB on Light, 10 dB on Medium and 15 dB on Strong), while loud effects and bass keep the level they were mixed at. A limiter still catches the peaks, and a sudden loud hit right after a quiet, lifted scene is caught sooner. The same change applies with ExoPlayer and MPV. (#69)
  • 25 and 30 fps video switches the TV to 25 and 30 Hz again. Since nt.8, frame rate matching sent 25 fps to 50 Hz and 30 fps to 60 Hz even when the TV offers 25 or 30 Hz. It now picks the exact rate when the TV has it, like the official app. Motion looks the same either way, since at 50 Hz each frame was just shown twice. 50 or 60 Hz is still used when there's no exact mode (720p usually has no 25 Hz), and on TVs that switch refresh rate without going black (QMS), where a switch to 25 Hz would black out the screen.
  • Slow addons such as AIOStreams show their results again. Arc gave up on an addon after 15 seconds, while the official app waits up to a minute. AIOStreams only answers once every source behind it has answered, so when one of them was slow or down (TorBox, for example) the whole result was thrown away and you saw nothing from it. Addons now get 60 seconds, and a new Addon response timeout setting under Settings > Playback > Stream selection lets you choose anything from 10 to 60 seconds. Other addons still show up as soon as they answer.
  • Badges under the player title show much more of your badge pack. With a Fusion badge pack imported, the player often showed only resolution and audio channels. Most packs are written for file names (DDP5.1, DV.HDR) or AIOStreams labels (DD+, HDR+DV), and the player didn't describe what it plays in those words. Now it does, so codec, HDR and Dolby Vision, audio format, Atmos, DTS-HD MA and DTS:X, 10-bit and the audio language (including AIOStreams' flags) show up too, with ExoPlayer and MPV. Badges still show what is actually playing: a Dolby Vision file your TV plays as HDR10 shows HDR, not DV.
  • Player badges follow an audio track switch. Pick another audio track and the badges catch up within a moment, without flickering in between. A commentary or other second track no longer shows Atmos just because the file name says the main track has it.
  • Player badges show up as playback starts. They used to appear only a few seconds in, once the first buffering had finished. They now fill in while the stream loads, so they're there when the picture starts.
  • No more empty frames between the seek thumbnails. The strip showed a tile every 30 seconds while the thumbnails made before play are spaced wider (every minute on Full, every 2 minutes on Faster for a 4K remux), so after a finished "Generating thumbnails" screen many tiles were blank. The strip now only shows as many tiles as there are thumbnails and fills in as more are made during the film. (#72, #70)
  • The title, logo and description at the top of Home sit just above the rows again, as in the official app. They kept room for four lines of description and two rows of details whatever the title had, so short descriptions left a gap above the row name and the logo could touch the top of the screen. (#68)
  • Home is smoother in the first seconds after opening Arc. Catalogue rows are now prepared away from the part of the app that draws the screen, and the rows further down wait a few seconds before they load by themselves, then arrive in batches instead of one by one. (#51)
  • Anime from your library stays in the Calendar and Coming up. Shows saved from anime add-ons such as Kitsu no longer drop out after Arc restarts, and ones you haven't opened in a while are matched too, so they show without "Also follow my other services".
  • Shows coming back after a long break stay in the Calendar. A show in your Nuvio library is followed even when you last watched it more than a year ago, so a new season after a long gap turns up in Coming up.
  • Thumbnail settings follow the main switch. With Seek thumbnails off, Generate thumbnails before play, Thumbnails before play and Thumbnails from a copy are greyed out.
  • Device assessment suggestions read as suggestions. The value on the right is what the assessment suggests, not what is in use, and now says so: "Suggested: On · Auto, up to about 10 GB" next to "Currently: Off". With the disk cache off, nothing is stored. (#73)

Good to know

  • Night mode makes everything louder, most of all on Strong, because it now lifts the quiet parts and leaves the loud ones as they were. Turn the TV down a little when you switch it on. As before, it never changes sound passed straight through to a soundbar, receiver or TV.
  • An addon that never answers keeps its loading sign up for up to a minute instead of 15 seconds, now that addons get longer. Everything else on the list is there to pick from in the meantime. If that bothers you, lower Addon response timeout.
  • Some badges from your pack still only show in the stream list. The player only shows what is playing, so source (WEB-DL, REMUX), release group, edition and subtitle badges stay off it. So do packs that match the emoji or hidden markers an AIOStreams formatter adds. If your pack still shows little in the player, choose another one under Player badges in Settings > Layout > Streams, or none to use Arc's own badges.
