Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.7.4

latest release: 1.1.0-nt.7.4.1

Nuvio Arc is my experimental fork of Nuvio for trying new ideas, not a replacement for the official app. It runs on the same boxes and works best on stronger ones. It's a one-person hobby project: report problems or ideas in this repo's Issues (best effort) or at r/NuvioForks, and please don't report issues from this build to the official Nuvio GitHub or Discord.

Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.7.4, still built on official NuvioTV 1.1.0-beta.7. It installs over nt.7.3 and keeps all your settings.

This release is about smoother playback with less memory, above all on 2 GB boxes like the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Before building it I tested Automatic speed-up against servers from Sydney to South Africa, with hundreds of simulated playbacks at the memory a 2 GB box really has. The lesson: the pieces still downloading take memory away from the buffer, so the best setup is the smallest one that still keeps up with the film. Automatic speed-up now works that way, remembers what worked on each server, and shares the server with thumbnails instead of fighting them for it. The buffer also stays topped up now, and the buffer settings tell you what your box can really hold.

Nothing changes if you've set Connections to a number yourself: your own settings are used as before.

New

  • One buffer setting instead of two. Min buffer duration and Max buffer duration are now one setting, Buffer ahead (10 to 600 s with ExoPlayer native memory, 10 to 120 s without). Your old Max value carries over. A line under it shows how many seconds of a 4K remux and of a web file your box can really hold, and it turns amber when the setting is longer than a remux can fill. Initial buffer and Buffer after rebuffer get the same amber line when a remux can't fill them on your box.
  • Add-on landscape rows keep their own pictures again. Rows an add-on already shows as landscape use the add-on's pictures. A new switch in Settings > Layout, Backdrop with Logo on add-on landscape rows, gives them the backdrop with the title logo instead, separately from Always Backdrop with Logo. If you use Landscape posters, add-on landscape rows now also show the add-on's pictures unless you turn the new switch on.

Better

Playback and Automatic speed-up

  • The buffer stays topped up. The player now loads again as soon as the buffer drops a little below its full size, instead of filling it, waiting until it has run down to the minimum and only then loading again. There's more film in hand when a server slows down.
  • Automatic speed-up picks its downloads by memory. It uses the fewest downloads and the smallest pieces that still keep up with the film, so more of your box's memory goes to the buffer itself. Quick servers get small pieces, slow ones bigger pieces, and 3 GB and 4 GB boxes may use more downloads than before.
  • Automatic speed-up remembers each server. The next film from the same server starts straight away on the downloads and piece size that worked last time, instead of measuring again. If a film runs short again after a download was handed back, it goes straight back to what it needed.
  • 2 GB boxes keep a proper buffer again. Boxes like the Fire TV Stick and Xiaomi Box S now keep at least as many seconds ahead as the official app. The back buffer only uses what is left over, and when memory runs low the buffer ahead is cut less. Arc also sets aside less memory when a film starts, so these boxes get a usable buffer instead of the bare minimum.
  • 2 GB boxes free up memory for the film. When a film starts, Arc lets go of the posters and backdrops it was holding for Home (they come back from storage afterwards), so the buffer and thumbnails get that memory instead.

Thumbnails

  • Thumbnails make way for the film. While you watch, thumbnails pause as soon as the buffer runs low and pick up again once it has recovered.
  • The film and thumbnails share TorBox's limit. TorBox allows 8 requests at once per account. The film and thumbnails now stay inside that together, so TorBox no longer refuses them. If a server refuses anyway, thumbnails stop for 2 minutes so the film has the server to itself; the film keeps loading and only asks a little less at once until the server is happy again.
  • Thumbnails from copies are faster while you watch. A 720p or 1080p copy is now read 3 or 4 pictures at a time during playback instead of one, depending on the server. On 2 GB boxes Arc waits a little longer for a copy before it decodes the 4K film itself.

Calendar and Coming up

  • The Calendar remembers your view. It opens on Week, List or Month, whichever you picked last, separately for each profile.
  • Shows you started long ago come back to the Calendar when a new episode is on the way. A show you watched more than a year ago now counts as followed once its next episode turns up in Continue Watching, so the Calendar shows the same new episodes as Coming up.
  • Coming up no longer repeats what Continue Watching already has. If Continue Watching has something from a show to watch, Coming up leaves that show out, so you don't see an older episode marked New or a date for an episode you can already play.
  • Coming up and the Calendar agree on dates. When the Calendar knows a show's episode dates, Coming up uses those, so a whole season released at once no longer shows as "Tomorrow".

Fixed

  • Calendar List: the "Next from" episodes in the right-hand panel can be reached. Down from the buttons moves into them and the panel scrolls them into view. OK opens the show.
  • Layout settings stay put after a restart. Changes like the Continue Watching card style and the poster shading are kept until they have reached your account, retried if the upload fails, and no longer reset when the copy in your account doesn't have them.
  • Landscape cards show the title logo instead of plain text when an add-on's own logo link doesn't load. The card now uses the same logo as the big picture at the top.

Install

The update banner in the app installs this release for you. Or download the APK for your device below and install it over the top (your data is kept):

  • app-full-arm64-v8a-release.apk for most current boxes (Shield, Ugoos, Google TV).
  • app-full-armeabi-v7a-release.apk for the Fire TV Stick and other 32-bit devices.

Nuvio Arc installs over earlier Nuvio Arc and Nuvio-test builds, keeps all your settings, profiles and sign-ins, and still installs next to the official Nuvio. Version 1.1.0-nt.7.4, package com.nuvio.tv.test.
