Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.7.3

Nuvio Arc is my experimental fork of Nuvio for trying new ideas, not a replacement for the official app. It runs on the same boxes and works best on stronger ones. It's a one-person hobby project: report problems or ideas in this repo's Issues (best effort) or at r/NuvioForks, and please don't report issues from this build to the official Nuvio GitHub or Discord.

A hotfix on top of Nuvio Arc 1.1.0-nt.7.2, still built on official NuvioTV 1.1.0-beta.7. It installs over nt.7.2 and keeps all your settings.

This one is all about Automatic speed-up and heavy 4K remuxes, especially on 2 GB boxes like the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. On nt.7.2 a 90+ Mbit/s remux could keep stopping to load because speed-up stayed on a single download. Now it starts on several straight away, keeps enough for the film, and backs off gently when memory gets tight. The Stats panel also fits smaller screens now.

Nothing changes if you've set Connections to a number yourself: your own settings are used as before.

Better

Automatic speed-up

  • Remuxes start on several downloads from the very first second. Arc now recognises a heavy file before it starts, from the file's size and the title's running time, or from a name that says remux (or 4K with TrueHD or DTS-HD MA audio outside a web release). It no longer plays the first seconds on one download to measure it first, so the stop right at the start is gone. If the guess is wrong, the extra downloads are simply handed back once the buffer is comfortable.
  • 2 GB boxes like the Fire TV Stick get smaller pieces and more downloads. Speed-up now uses 8 MB pieces on these boxes (unless the server is slow to answer, like Real-Debrid, where 16 MB is faster), starts a remux on three downloads and can go up to six. Three 8 MB downloads hold less memory than two 16 MB ones did before.
  • It reads further ahead while the box has memory to spare. Extra pieces are fetched ahead of the film, so short dips in speed are covered instead of stopping the picture. The read-ahead builds up a couple of pieces at a time, and Arc never sends more than 8 requests to the server at once, so servers don't push back with "too many requests".
  • It backs off gently when memory gets tight. It gives back the read-ahead first, then one download at a time, and tries again after 15 seconds instead of a minute. It leaves Android to close idle background apps instead of holding back early, which is how Android is meant to free memory.
  • It never drops back to a single download that is too slow for the film. Once the buffer is comfortable it hands spare downloads back, but it keeps at least two when one alone can't carry the film. An extra download that makes things slower is no longer kept.

Stats panel

  • The Stats panel fits smaller screens. The detailed Dolby Vision rows (DV HDR, CM, levels, L1, L5) now only show for Dolby Vision profile 7 FEL and MEL on the native route, where they matter, and a long Audio line slides along instead of wrapping onto a second line.

Fixed

  • Automatic speed-up no longer gets stuck on one download on Fire TV and other boxes that send memory warnings while they still have plenty free. A routine memory warning from Fire OS locked speed-up at one download for the whole film, so heavy remuxes kept stopping to load. A warning now only holds it back when the box is really short of memory.

Install

The update banner in the app installs this release for you. Or download the APK for your device below and install it over the top (your data is kept):

  • app-full-arm64-v8a-release.apk for most current boxes (Shield, Ugoos, Google TV).
  • app-full-armeabi-v7a-release.apk for the Fire TV Stick and other 32-bit devices.

Nuvio Arc installs over earlier Nuvio Arc and Nuvio-test builds, keeps all your settings, profiles and sign-ins, and still installs next to the official Nuvio. Version 1.1.0-nt.7.3, package com.nuvio.tv.test.
