The next round on top of 1.1.0-beta-nt4.1: a smoother start on some boxes, a genre filter for Simkl and MDBList, a third subtitle language, better surround for TV and soundbar setups and two playback fixes.
New
- Smoother on some boxes. The app now ships a fresh start-up and screen profile, recorded on real use: Home in both interface styles, the title page, Search, Library, Settings, profiles, the player and its menus. Android uses it to prepare these parts in advance, so the first scrolls, menus and player panels after an install or update should no longer stutter while the code is compiled on the fly. Most noticeable on lower RAM boxes.
- Genre filter for Simkl and MDBList libraries. The Library's genre filter used to appear only with Trakt. With Simkl or MDBList as your library, Nuvio now looks up each title's genres on TMDB, in your TMDB language, once per title, and remembers them. The first time you open a big library the genres fill in over a minute or two; after that they are there straight away. With TMDB switched off in the settings, no lookups are made.
- A third preferred subtitle language, for example Spanish (Latin America), Spanish and English. "Show only preferred languages" keeps all three and hides the rest.
- Tunnel stalls you can see and reset. When a sound type once stalled in tunnel mode on your TV, the surround engine plays it without the video tunnel from then on. The audio card under Settings > Advanced now names those sound types ("Tunnel off after a stall: E-AC-3"), and Settings > Playback > Audio has a new Forget tunnel stalls row so the next video tries the tunnel again. Switching Tunneling off and on also clears it.
Fixed
- The first pause in tunnel mode. On some TVs the first pause after starting or resuming a video did not hold: the picture crawled on at a frame or two a second while the sound kept going, until you pressed play and pause again. Tunnelled playback now starts in a way that should avoid this, and if a pause still does not hold, the app notices within a few seconds and puts it right by itself.
- Slow picture after two quick skips. On some boxes, two quick skips forward with Tunneling off could leave the picture at a few frames a second until the next skip. The app now watches the picture for a few seconds after a skip and, if it stays slow, jumps to the same spot once more, which is what cured it by hand.
Changed
- The Play button in Nuvio V2 now matches the other buttons: the same glass look, white text and focus colour as Play trailer and Add to library. (nt4.1 coloured it in your theme colour, which gave black text on some themes.)
- Clearer audio diagnostics (Settings > Advanced): the audio card now says which lines describe the TV or receiver your box is plugged into and which describe the box itself, it names formats the TV lists but the box will not open, and it shows Android's own HDMI report next to it. With a soundbar behind your TV (ARC), the TV's numbers are not the soundbar's.
Good to know
- Box plugged into a TV with a soundbar on ARC: your box only sees the TV, so Auto used to trust the TV's numbers and could decode DTS to 6-channel PCM or pass TrueHD through, which the TV cannot hand on to a soundbar. New switch under Settings > Playback > Audio > Surround format (Auto only): "Sound goes through the TV to a soundbar (ARC)". With it on, formats the soundbar cannot take arrive as Dolby Digital 5.1, other decoded sound as stereo, and Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus still pass through untouched.
- Nuvio installed on the TV itself, soundbar on ARC: Auto now handles this by itself, no switch needed. ARC carries only stereo PCM and compressed 5.1, so formats the soundbar cannot take arrive as Dolby Digital 5.1 and other decoded sound as stereo; Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus pass through untouched. eARC is not affected.
- The HUD stats now says when the tunnel is on, on the sound line too: "passthrough (direct, tunnelled)" or "PCM 5.1 (tunnelled)". "(direct)" on its own only says the Dolby sound goes out to your receiver untouched; it never meant "not tunnelled".
Install
The update banner in the app installs this release for you. If it stops with "Update signature is unavailable" (seen on Android 9 and 10 before nt4), install the APK by hand. Or download the APK for your device below and install it over the top (your data is kept): arm64-v8a for most current boxes (Shield, Ugoos, Google TV), armeabi-v7a for the Fire TV Stick and other 32-bit devices.
