The reason for FB2 support is not the only that. However word 'News' becomes more and more toxic nowadays. This format is very similar to html and relatively easy to implement.
One of the main mission of the project is an ability to read any content on phone in the same uniform format. FB2 support is the next step to accomplish it.
This update focuses on an ability to read long articles or books. It's related with a new option to load aritcles with scripts. I personally need that option to display correctly math formulas in articles. For scripts enabled articles the app reloads it after phone orietnation change to layout it's content correctly. In the case when it was done by accident on a long heave aritcle a big perfomance penalty occurs. To escape from it the Landscape orientation menu was changed. Now it is connected to a viewed article only. So if one enables it, this (and only this) article would be displayed in landscape orientation.
I siggest you to have a rest from numerous never ending news for a while and start to read some interesting book or long article.
I always have been disturbed in a some way by word 'News' in thу app caption. New caption looks much better for me for it better reflects the app mission. It is also more consistent with my another android app 'Handy Clock'. And don't be afraid: I am not going to remove News functionality from Handy Reading :)
P.S. By the time of writing this text I have no access to my Developer Goggle play Console. So release to there may take a while
