emOS v0.11
emOS on the Echo 2nd gen (radar), DNS from your router, and hidden networks. Pair with controller 2.27.0 and firmware v2.19.0.
The emOS update rewrites the Echo's boot partition. Keep the Echo powered while it updates. A power cut during the roughly one second in which the boot partition is written leaves an image that cannot start, and that needs TWRP, a USB cable and the provisioning wizard to recover. Anything that goes wrong after that write is undone by the Echo itself: it rolls back after three boots that never reach the controller.
New
- The Echo 2nd gen (radar) runs emOS. One init serves both Echoes and tells them apart by Amazon's product id. Radar boots, joins WiFi and runs EchoMuse with no Amazon software in the path (#687, #1017). Provision it with controller 2.27.0's wizard (emOS flow) on an Echo unlocked with amonet-radar and carrying FireOS 6 in both slots. The wizard saves the stock boot image first; keep that file, it is the way back. Radar is not supported on FireOS.
Improved
- DNS comes from your router's DHCP lease, with the gateway used only when the lease names no server, and it follows a WiFi change without a reboot (#1066).
- The boot ring is smooth: a segment the moving head leaves fades into the trail without dipping to dark.
- Device nodes are made from sysfs, not from fixed numbers.
- Echo Dot 2nd gen: the WiFi patch helper pauses on an empty read instead of spinning.
Fixed
- A fresh 64-bit emOS install never stored its DHCP lease, so the lease's DNS was lost (#1066).
em-wifican join a hidden network (hat the prompt), and every network is probed by name (#1068).- A WiFi change could be refused for minutes after the supplicant stopped without releasing the old link (#1013).
Upgrading
Echo Dot 2nd gen, from the dashboard: the Echo's Updates tab has an emOS panel. Echo 2nd gen: the provisioning wizard's emOS flow. Nothing on /data is touched, so WiFi and the console password survive.
Checked
Full UAT with controller 2.27.0 on four Echoes, three of them on emOS (Dot 32-bit kernel, Dot 64-bit kernel, Echo 2nd gen), 2026-11-08: pass. Report: https://github.com/wilbowes/EchoMuse/blob/main/docs/uat-results/2.27.0.md
Known issues
- WiFi on FireOS 6 with a WPA3-only network does not work and cannot: the driver has no SAE. Use WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed (#536).
- The emOS update refuses an amonet 1 Echo that boots from slot B (#973).
- Both 3.5 mm jack channels can be silent on emOS (#999).
