v1.5.0 - Modding, New Character and More!

This release brings mods: a mods folder, a mod manager to turn them on and off, and the first eight mods:
StatOn, which shows your stats and the devil / angel room chances on screen the way Repentance does,
GenesisConsole, a debug console like Rebirth's to give yourself items, spawn anything and go anywhere,
WideSaac, for wide screens, whose Hyper Zoom makes the room fill the screen,
PillLog, which shows the effect of the pills you already know,
Itemnomicon, which tells you what an item, trinket or card does before you pick it up,
BaseTime, speedrun timers,
The Gone, a new character in the spirit of The Lost, and
RainbowVision, colours for colour-blind players.

๐Ÿงฉ Mods

Mods are small optional changes, kept as .mod files in a new mods folder next to the program (Android:
IsaacRecomp/mods/, Switch: sd:/switch/isaac/mods/). The program puts the included mods there the first time
it starts. Every mod is off until you turn it on, so the game plays exactly as before unless you choose
otherwise.

One text file: which mods are on, and their options, are in mods/mods.txt (the game writes it the first time
it starts). Change it with any text editor: on = 1 turns a mod on, and its options are right under it, each explained
on the line above.

Mod manager: or open tools/mod_manager.html in any web browser (offline, nothing to install, no folder to
choose): the mods are grouped by kind with a one-line summary each; flip the switches, change the options (sliders
for the ones with a range) and save mods.txt, then put it in the mods folder in place of the
old one. Open your current mods.txt there first to start from it. Mods are read when the game starts, and the mods
that come with the program update themselves with a new version, keeping your options.

๐Ÿ“Š StatOn

Your character's stats on the left of the screen during a run, each with its symbol:
speed, tears, damage, range, shot speed and luck (luck only in Wrath of the Lamb and Eternal Edition: the original
game doesn't have it), and below them the chance of a devil room and of an angel room on this floor. When an item
changes a stat, the difference appears next to it for a couple of seconds, green when it goes up and red when it goes
down.

  • The values are the game's own: damage is calculated by the game's own damage formula, including Eternal
Edition's extra damage with some tear items, and the devil / angel chances by the formula the game uses when the boss
dies (no damage taken on the floor or in the boss fight, Pentagram, Book of Belial, Book of Revelations, a recent
    devil room...).
  • It moves and hides with the game's HUD, and works in all three versions.
  • Options (in the mod manager, or in mods/StatOn.mod): show_changes = 0 hides the differences, show_deals = 0
hides the devil / angel chances, opacity from 10 to 100, size (1-5, 1 by default) and margin (1-5:
how far from the left edge).
  • It only reads the game: runs play exactly the same with it on (checked against the original with item runs in all
    three versions).

๐Ÿงช GenesisConsole

A console you open during a run to type commands, in the spirit of Rebirth's debug console:

  • Items: give mom's knife, remove 7, items, and find <text> to look anything up.
  • Spawn anything: enemies and bosses by name or number (spawn monstro, spawn gaper 5), pickups (spawn soulheart 3, spawn goldenkey), items on pedestals, trinkets, cards and pills.
  • You: hearts, heart containers, soul hearts, coins, bombs, keys, a charged active item, and your stats held at any
value (damage 50, tears 10, speed 2...), with god mode.
  • Anywhere: goto boss, goto devil, goto angel, goto secret..., stage cathedral, stage caves 2, next,
map, and doors on to keep every door open.
  • Open it with the key above Tab, the controller's Back / Minus button, or a tap with three fingers; the game
pauses while it's open. Tab completes commands and names, and earlier commands come back with Up / the D-pad (handy
with a controller). On Switch and Android the system keyboard is used. The music keeps playing while it's open.
  • unlock unlocks everything (characters, items, chests..., The Gone and his things) until you close the game;
    it isn't saved.
  • Everything it can do is explained in tools/genesis_wiki.html.

Warning

While GenesisConsole is on, nothing is saved: no achievements, unlocks, statistics or collection, and option
changes aren't kept either. Your save file isn't touched: turn the mod
off to play normally again.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ WideSaac

  • For wide screens (16:9, 16:10, 21:9...) or any other shape: the menus fill the whole screen (more of their own
sheet), and during play black bars by default, or with fill = 1 the game's own background art on the sides (more of the menu's own sheet is shown; nothing is stretched). Screen-
wide shading (the pause screen, fades) covers the whole screen too.
  • Hyper Zoom (on by default; a tick box in the mod manager): while you play, the room itself fills the screen. The HUD band and
the map go away; your hearts (top right), active item with its charges, coins, bombs, keys and pill / card are shown
on the room's right side, like StatOn on the left. It stays like that the whole run, paused and on the death screen
too; a boss's "VS" intro, the cutscenes between floors and the endings are shown in the room's space with black on
their sides, so the zoom never changes.
  • Minimap+: with Hyper Zoom, press M (L3 on a controller, a four-finger tap on a touch screen) to
show or hide the floor's map, larger and see-through, in the middle of the room.
  • On touch screens, the HUD taps (bombs, active item, pill / card, pause) follow the moved HUD.
  • It only changes what is drawn: runs play exactly the same.

๐Ÿ’Š PillLog

Once you've taken a pill, you know that colour for the rest of the run, everywhere:

  • its effect is written over every pill of that colour lying in the room or for sale, green when it's a good one
    and red when it isn't;
  • the pause screen lists the six pill colours of the run with what each one does (??? until you take it);
  • optionally (banner = 1), picking one up, the banner says the effect instead of "Pills here!".

Its opacity can be set too.

The names are the game's own, the ones it already shows next to a pill you hold (including Health Up / Down
and the good versions with PHD or the Lucky Foot).

๐Ÿ“– Itemnomicon

Walk up to an item, a trinket or a card you can pick up or buy, and a card over it tells you what it is: its
name in the colour of its quality (as Rebirth rates the same items: grey 0,
white 1, blue 2, violet 3, gold 4), whether it's a passive or active item and its quality, the stats it changes (green
up, red down) and what it does. The stat changes are the game's own numbers: every item was measured in each of the three versions (they're
what the item gives Isaac with nothing else; some items stack differently with others). It moves out of your way if
you stand above the item. Options: how close you have to be (in tiles; 1, next to it, by default), its opacity, and
whether trinkets and cards get a card too.

PillLog and Itemnomicon only read the game: runs play exactly the same with them on.

โฑ๏ธ BaseTime

Two speedrun timers next to the map (with Hyper Zoom, at the room's bottom left):

  • Game time (mm:ss): the time you can play. It stops while paused, in cutscenes and while loading.
  • Total time (mm:ss:mmm): everything since the run started, pauses and loading included.

Both stop when the run ends (green when you reach an ending, red when you die). The main menu shows, on a note of
its own, your best game time
- the fastest run to the furthest ending you have reached: Mom, then Mom's Heart,
then Isaac or Satan, then The Chest (a further ending always takes its place) - and below it your last run's total
time
, with "win" or "died". It only reads the game.

๐Ÿ‘ป The Gone

A new character, in the spirit of Rebirth's The Lost: on the character select screen there's one more place
after the last character, with his own card like the other characters' (name, stats and starting item, in the
game's own handwriting). The Gone is a pale Isaac (3.5 damage, Isaac's speed) who starts with Spirit of the Night (in the original game,
which doesn't have it, Transcendence and the Ouija Board: the same two effects) and has no hearts at all: he can't
pick up hearts of any kind, gain heart containers or extra lives, and the first hit kills him. In a devil room
he can take one deal for free, and then the other deals disappear. Random can pick him too.

He has to be unlocked first: clear three floors in a row without getting hit or picking up a heart (until
then he shows as Locked, with how to unlock him, like the other characters). And he unlocks four new things of
his own
, each with its own "You unlocked" card (also among the found secrets), an icon in the collection and its
description in Itemnomicon:

  • Negative Isaac (beat Mom's Heart with him): a playing card (red back), found like the others and from Deck of
Cards. It makes you untouchable for 15 seconds (or until you leave the room), like Book of Shadows.
  • Nothing (beat Mom's Heart with him, with no item but his own): an item with no picture, in treasure rooms.
Entering a room, each enemy (not bosses) may just not be there.
  • The Void Shard (beat Isaac with him): a devil-room item (2 hearts, or 3 soul hearts). One enemy shot in four
goes through you; when you get hurt, sometimes every enemy in the room takes 50 damage.
  • Black Mirror (beat Satan with him): an active item (3 charges) in treasure rooms. The room turns negative and
the enemies chase, shoot and hurt each other for a few seconds, ignoring you.

๐ŸŒˆ RainbowVision

Colours for colour-blind players: the whole picture is recoloured so the colours you can't tell apart look
different (hearts, pills, enemies, items). Choose your kind in the mod manager: deuteranopia (green-blind, the most
common), protanopia (red-blind) or tritanopia (blue-blind), and how strong the change is. Only the colours on
screen change.

โš™๏ธ Under the hood

  • Faster drawing, above all on Switch: the game's big see-through layers (blood, debris, shadows) are drawn only
where they have something, and plain rectangles (fades, dimming) without making a picture of them first.
  • Touch screens: the console's three-finger tap and Minimap+'s four-finger tap count only when the fingers touch
the screen together, not when you tap while holding a stick.
  • Switch: video capture (holding the Capture button) is asked for, for host games whose setting needs it.
  • The mods that come with the program update themselves when a newer program brings a newer version of them, keeping
    your options.
  • Less input lag, smoother motion: each game tick is now timed to arrive just before the screen draws a new image
(60 / 120 Hz screens), so what you press shows up as soon as possible and no image has to guess where things are.
  • Boss music: after a boss that splits when it dies (Duke of Flies...), the boss theme no longer starts again, and
the "boss defeated" music plays when the last of its spawn dies.
  • Pause screen: Escape (or the controller's back button) closes it and goes on with the run.
  • "Who Am I?" with a controller: Select is chosen first; left / right turn the circle of characters; up / down
move between Back, Hard mode, Select and Random.
  • Locked characters can no longer be started by moving onto one and pressing Select in the same instant.
  • GenesisConsole: closing it during a fade no longer makes the screen flash bright (the game's clock stops while it
    is open).
  • A tear of very high damage no longer flashes its shadow at the top left of the room.
  • Slightly less memory and faster variable lookups in the game's code, on every platform. Runs play exactly the same.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Downloads

Platform File How to install
Windows (64-bit) IsaacRecomp_Win64.zip Extract, put Isaac.exe next to IsaacRecomp.exe, run it
Linux (64-bit) IsaacRecomp_Linux64.tar.gz Extract, put Isaac.exe next to isaac, run ./isaac

Updating from 1.4.x: replace the program files (on PC, also copy the new mods and tools folders; the program
adds the new mods to mods by itself anyway). Your saves
and isaac.ini keep working. On Switch, copy the new switch/ folder over the old one. On Android, just install the
new APK: the mods folder appears in IsaacRecomp/ the first time it starts. On any platform, which mods are on is
in mods/mods.txt: edit it with any text editor, or open it in tools/mod_manager.html (on a PC or phone), change
what you want, save it and copy it back.

Full details in README.txt (PC / Android) and README_SWITCH.txt (Switch).
