To update, run the new installer on your existing install folder. It keeps your game files, saves and totk.ini, and rebuilds totk.exe and the shaders.
Update recommended: critical fixes
Every player on 0.2.1 or older should update. These bugs lose progress, block the story or stop the game from starting:
- Lost saves (#260, #263). When another program held a file in the save folder (an antivirus, Explorer's preview, a cloud sync tool), every save of the session could fail without a message, and the next start deleted the progress. Now a save that cannot replace the previous one is kept, and the next save or start moves it into place. The log names the program that holds the files.
- "Camera Work in the Depths" could not be finished (#13, #63, #118, #252). On 1.2.1 the Purah Pad camera recognised nothing, so photos did not register in the Compendium and the quest could not progress. On 1.4.3 the name label under the reticle blinked.
- Equipment locked after a Fuse (#18). Weapons, shields and bows could stay locked until the next load, on both 1.2.1 and 1.4.3.
- Crash a few seconds after the window opens (#176) on systems with a damaged or unusual system font. The menu now checks each system font and skips the ones it cannot read.
- Crash at every start after turning off "Virtual core gate" (#212). Despite its description, the switch turned the gate off. It is removed from the settings menu. The
free_coreskey stays intotk.inifor experiments, andtotk.ini.examplewarns that it can crash the game.
Game versions
- The installer now accepts the 1.1.1 update (v131072) in addition to 1.2.1 and 1.4.3 (#173). Many mods and saves were made on 1.1.1. On 1.1.1 a game resolution other than 16:9 is scaled to the window instead of widening the camera.
Settings
- Field of view (Screen tab, 70 to 140 %, changes at once). 100 % keeps the game's own camera. Bow and scope zoom scale with it. 1.4.3 only.
- Colour (Screen tab): a colour profile (Game's own, Vivid, Clarity, Custom) and sliders for brightness, contrast, saturation and gamma (#136). The adjustment covers the HUD too, but not the settings menu. At the default values nothing changes and nothing extra runs.
Saves
- Starting the game no longer pushes older backups out of
save-backup. The game rewrites its save files with the same bytes at start, and each of those saves used to make a new backup.
Crash reports
- A failed assertion or abort on Windows now writes a crash report to the log instead of closing the game without a word.
- The "command recording buffer" crash (#94) now logs what went wrong in detail. If you hit it, please attach
logs/totk.logto the issue.
Performance
- Linux: the game no longer makes a system call on every lock to look up its thread id. Reported gains: 36 to 46 fps on an RTX 2060 laptop, 98 to 120 fps on an RTX 2070 Super with a 7800X3D (#236).
- AMD GPUs record graphics commands on a separate thread again. It was off by default because of device losses (#5, #40), and those no longer occur with it.
vk_recorder = 0intotk.inistill turns it off.
Installer
- The shader step reads only the shader folders instead of the whole RomFS: about 50 s down to 2 s per install.
- With the graphics pipeline library off (
gpl = 0), the shader step now counts the variants it skips and says so in its summary. Before, it reported them as built. - Linux: Russian text renders again, the window uses the system UI font, and the installer opens on systems without libXft or libXrender.
Thanks
Thanks to shenjackyuanjie for 1.1.1 support and the faster shader step, to JieML1100 for finding the cause of the equipment lock and writing the patch, to Lucas-blip-png for the field of view and colour settings and to STS78721 for the colour profiles they are built on, to H.A. Forster for finding, measuring and fixing the Linux thread id cost and to SchulzCode for confirming it, to wdiasjunior, eioo and paulo-santana for the Linux fixes and reports, to lcd1232 for the Russian text in the Linux installer, to lunar-me for the installer guide fix, to Rockenheim and kirakage88 for reporting the lost saves, and to everyone who reported the camera, crash and installer bugs fixed here.
Warning
The Linux build is new and barely tested. Its author ran a full install and played on Arch Linux with a Radeon RX 7800 XT. This release's AppImage has not been run on Linux yet, and nobody has tried it on a Steam Deck. Please report what works and what breaks in the issues.
