1.0.0 Beta 28

pre-release7 hours ago

A good amount of changes in this beta!

  • Intel macOS VMs (Big Sur and newer) support Apple Paravirtualized Graphics in QEMU
  • If a VM uses SPICE display, MacMulator shows the VM view in one of its windows, giving much more control on the VM itself. This was made possible by CocoaSpice
  • Added snapshotting features for all VMs (both QEMU and Apple Virtualization Framework VMs, both Intel and Apple Silicon). In some cases (Apple Virtualization Framework VMs on Apple silicon) live snapshots are also supported, with the full state of the VM saved. In some other cases (Intel and QEMU) only at rest snapshots are supported for now, so the VM must be shut down to be snapshotted or restored.
  • MacMulator is now shipped in 2 variants: App Store Edition and Enthusiast Edition. We wanted to keep the original philosophy of MacMulator, to let you run your VMs using any QEMU distribution of your choice (Homebrew, MacPorts, custom, ...). But we also wanted to distruibute the app on the App Store. Unfortunately, App Store sandboxing requirements conflict with the ability of running any custom QEMU executable on the user machine. The solution is to have 2 apps: The App Store edition bundles QEMU (The UTM build, the best available) and it does not let you change it, but it runs in a sandbox and it can be distributed on the App Store. The Enthusiast Edition, instead, keeps the original MacMulator idea to bring your own QEMU. It will be distributed only here on GitHub.

In the assets below you will find:

  • MacMulator.app.zip : The App Store Edition of MacMulator
  • MacMulator.EE.app.zip : The Enthusiast Edition of MacMulator
  • MacMulator-UTM-SysRoot-10846077902.zip: A copy of the UTM SysRoot used in this build, containing QEMU and CocoaSpice. It is required if you want to build MacMulator from sources. Unzip it in the project root folder.
