v1.6.4.dev0 — Vector search reliability & Turso error handling
Release Date: 2026-10-13
Changes: v1.6.3 → v1.6.4.dev0
Pull Requests: #5745
Summary
This small development release fixes a key vector-search bug and improves Turso database error handling. It also updates a few packaging dependencies and tests so search is more reliable and errors are handled consistently.
Highlights
- Fixed a vector-search bug that prevented selecting raw vector data during search (pgvector and Lancedb adapters) — reduces bandwidth and avoids errors.
- Turso adapter now raises OperationalError for file/open problems so callers and ORMs handle them consistently.
- Dependency and packaging updates: cognee-mcp bumped, lancedb and related packages upgraded in the lockfile.
- Improved and added tests around vector distance semantics and shared Turso behavior.
Improvements
- PGVector and Lancedb adapters (the pieces that talk to Postgres+pgvector and Lancedb vector stores) no longer ask the database to return the full raw vector column during a similarity search. This means searches return only the metadata and nearest-neighbor scores, which reduces network payload, avoids size or serialization errors, and makes search responses faster and more reliable.
- Turso database dialect now converts low-level file/open errors (pyturso IoError) into SQLAlchemy's OperationalError. In plain terms: when Turso can't open or access its data files, Cognee will raise a standard database OperationalError instead of an obscure raw exception. That makes error handling predictable for applications and tooling that expect DBAPI-style errors.
Performance
- Reduced data transfer during vector searches by not returning full vector columns; practical result: lower memory usage and faster search responses for large vectors.
Bug Fixes
- SDK-1096 — Fixed an issue where search queries selected the raw vector column in pgvector and Lancedb adapters. Selecting the raw vector could cause oversized responses or trigger serialization problems; the adapters now exclude the vector column from the selected fields during search.
- Turso open errors now surfaced as OperationalError instead of a raw IoError, preventing unexpected exception types from bubbling up to callers.
Technical Changes
- Bumped cognee-mcp package version to 0.5.7 and synced lock files with cognee 1.6.3. This is a packaging/lockfile change for the MCP server distribution.
- Lockfile upgrades: lancedb updated (to 0.39.0), lance-namespace and lance-namespace-urllib3-client updated (to 0.11.1), pylance updated (to 12.0.0), and dateparser was added as a dependency entry in the lockfile. These updates bring newer native wheels and bugfixes for underlying vector-store libraries.
- Tests updated/added: vector distance semantics tests and shared Turso tests were added/adjusted to validate the fixes.
