Fix: watches and sleep; GameMaker cheats

pre-release5 hours ago

beta124.07

Guide: watch fields, watch methods, break on one object, code watch

Update the gen2 fork first: Settings > Install gen2 fork, then reboot. This Breeze needs gen2 v0.20; with an older fork every gen2 action says "Version mismatch".

A fix you should have

If you use Watch methods or Code watch, update. In the last three releases, if the console went to sleep while one of those watches was running, the game could crash some time later for no visible reason.

That is fixed. A watch that is cut off by sleep now cleans up after itself, and Breeze keeps its own copy of what it changed so it can put things right the next time a watch starts or stops.

If the console did sleep during a watch on an earlier version, restart the game once.

GameMaker: make a cheat from a variable

On the GameMaker variables screen, Make cheat (ZL+Plus) now turns the line under the cursor into a cheat.

A global variable (Main > GameMaker): the Make cheat screen opens with everything filled in. Set the value and press Make cheat there.

A variable of one object, such as the player's jump height:

  1. Get to the object's variables: Code watch, Watch methods on the object, then Field view of object.
  2. Put the cursor on the variable and press Make cheat. Type the value, then a name.
  3. Two cheats appear in the cheat list. Open the one called gmobj_ followed by the object's name in the cheat editor and press Add ASM once.
  4. Turn that cheat on, then the one with your variable's name.

The value is now held, on every copy of that object in the game. For an enemy object that means every enemy of that kind.

Each line on the variables screen also shows the variable's offset and id now, for those who build pointer cheats by hand.

Good to know

  • After adding another variable of the same object, press Add ASM on its gmobj_ cheat again.
  • The gmobj_ cheat must be on, and above the variable's cheat in the list, for the variable's cheat to do anything.
  • Some values are worked out again by the game every frame and will not stay. Look for the variable they are worked out from.
  • The GameMaker screens have been tried on one game, Well Dweller.

For PC connect users

gen2 repair puts back anything a cut-off watch left in the game's code; gen2 watch <address> x0 lists every object a method runs on. See docs/pcconnect.md.
