beta124.06
Guide: watch fields, watch methods, break on one object, code watch
No new gen2 fork this time. If you installed the fork for beta124.05 you are set.
This release is for GameMaker games, the ones exported with the YoYo Compiler (YYC). Breeze's Game Information screen names the engine.
Global variables by name
A new button on Main, GameMaker, lists the game's global variables by name with their live values. In many GameMaker games that is where health, money, upgrades and unlocked abilities are kept.
- Filter (R) and type part of a name:
health,coin,key. - Edit value (Y) writes a number.
- Show (ZL+R) switches between values only and everything. A game's scripts are globals too, so "all" is a much longer list.
If a value jumps straight back after you edit it, the game works it out again every frame from another variable. Look for the one it is worked out from.
Code watch works on GameMaker
Code watch (gen2 menu, second page) no longer needs any preparation on a GameMaker game: press Start. The list is by game object. On the test game, one attack put the attack object at the top of the list, and using an item showed that item's object and nothing else.
An object's own variables
Things like walking speed, jump height and gravity belong to the player object, not to the globals.
- In Code watch, put the cursor on the object and press Watch methods (ZL + left stick click).
- Go back to the game for a moment.
- On a line marked
called, press Field view of object (Y).
You get that object's variables by name, with the same Edit value and Filter.
Good to know
- Tried on one game, Well Dweller. Other GameMaker games may be built with a different version of the engine; if a screen comes up empty or wrong, that is the likely reason.
- Position (
x,y) and the other built-in variables are not in the list yet. - An array shows only where it is, not what is in it.
- Function names from the game's scripts now show in ASM Explorer on GameMaker games without any setup.
For PC connect users
gmvars lists and writes GameMaker variables; prep gm_functions builds the function map. See docs/pcconnect.md.
