Watch fields: See which field is active

pre-release4 hours ago

beta124.03

Update the gen2 fork first: Settings > Install gen2 fork, then reboot. This Breeze needs gen2 v0.17; with the older fork every gen2 action says "Version mismatch".

The field view has a new button: Watch fields (ZL + left stick click).

It answers a question that used to take a lot of guessing: of all the fields in this object, which ones does the game actually use? Breeze watches the whole object at once and lists each field the first time the game reads or writes it.

What to press

  1. Open a field view on a live object (a pinned instance), for example the player's stats.
  2. Press Watch fields (ZL + left stick click). The Field watch screen opens and the watch starts.
  3. Go back to the game and play. A box at the top left of the game shows the fields as they are found, the newest on top.
  4. Come back to Breeze and open the gen2 menu: it shows the Field watch screen with the full list and live values.

To find what one action touches -- taking a hit, using an item -- press Clear (Minus), do only that in the game, and look at the list.

Button Key What it does
Start / Stop R run or end the watch
Sweep unseen ZL+R keep looking at full game speed (see below)
Clear Minus forget the list and start again
Read= / Write= ZL+Up / ZL+Down count reads, writes or both
Mark seen Y from now on only newly found fields are marked new
View ZL+Y by offset, newest first, or new only
Select X back to the field view, on that field
Memory Explorer L open the field in Memory Explorer
Watch this field ZL+X set up the normal gen2 watch on that field, to find the code
Close field watch ZL+Plus stop and get the normal gen2 menu back

Reads, writes and speed

  • Write only is light: it finds what the game changes (health, gauges, flags) and the game runs normally.
  • Read and write finds much more but slows the game, because some fields are read hundreds of times a second.

When the list has stopped growing, press Sweep unseen. Breeze then watches only the fields that have not shown up yet, a few at a time in turn, and the game runs at full speed again. In the test game this went from 350 to 480 stops a second to 2 stops in 31 seconds, and both were new fields. The catch: a field the game touches only once can slip past a sweep, so run the normal watch first.

Good to know

  • The watch runs while you play, with Breeze closed. Stop it (or Close field watch) when you are done; the game is slowed a little for as long as it runs.
  • The list is kept in the game's Breeze folder. Watch fields on the same object shows it again.
  • Lines called (unnamed) are bytes the game used that no field in the list covers.
  • Tried on a Unity game. The same button is in the Unreal object view but has not been tried yet, and neither has the View button.

Also changed

  • Settings: the Noexes button is now at the end of the list.
