HOME toggles between Breeze and the game

pre-release4 hours ago

Breeze beta119.00

HOME can now switch straight between Breeze and the game you are playing,
with my SwitchU fork as the HOME menu. Settings installs that fork and
turns it on or off, and every download waits on a progress screen instead of
changing menus behind your back.

HOME toggles between Breeze and the game

Open Breeze from the SwitchU menu, through hbmenu or the profile takeover. With a
game suspended, HOME now switches to the game and back instead of opening the
SwitchU menu. Exit (B) returns to hbmenu, and HOME keeps switching between
the homebrew that is open and the game. To reach the SwitchU menu, set Home
toggle to Off or close hbmenu.

Settings > Home toggle decides how Breeze comes back:

  • No restart: Breeze stays open behind the game, so HOME returns to exactly
where you left it, until the console sleeps.
  • Fast restart: HOME closes Breeze, and the next HOME opens it again. This
needs the profile takeover; opened from hbmenu, it behaves like No restart.
  • Off: HOME opens the SwitchU menu. Off lasts for the session only: Breeze
switches back to No restart the next time it starts, so turning it off to
reach the SwitchU menu doesn't cost a trip to Settings afterwards.

With Home toggle on, HOME from Breeze with no game running opens the SwitchU menu.
If the game opens its keyboard or an error dialog while Breeze is open behind
it, Breeze closes so the dialog can appear. If the game closes, Breeze comes to
the front.

Breeze open behind the game is also closed when the console goes to sleep, so
the game wakes up on its own. An applet held behind the game across a long
sleep could leave the game unresponsive and HOME and the power menu unable to
respond. The next HOME opens Breeze fresh through the profile takeover; if
Breeze came from hbmenu, HOME opens the SwitchU menu instead. Sleep still starts
at once.

Home toggle needs my SwitchU fork, so the option only appears once the
fork is installed.

Install and switch SwitchU from Settings

The old qlaunch=0/1 button is now the SwitchU button:

  • Install SwitchU fork: press twice. Breeze downloads the fork (about 47 MB,
tomvita/SwitchU release 1.2.0a) and installs it, replacing any SwitchU on
the SD card, including the upstream version. If SwitchU was off, it stays off.
  • SwitchU=on / SwitchU=off: press twice to change the HOME menu for the next
restart. Breeze renames atmosphere/contents/0100000000001000/exefs.nsp to and
from exefs.nsp.disabled, exactly as SwitchU-Manager does, so either tool can
switch it back. Turning SwitchU on is refused while switch/SwitchU/bin/menu/main
    or main.npdm is missing.
  • SwitchU=conflict: both files exist. Delete the one you don't want.

Breeze recognises the fork by sdmc:/config/SwitchU/home_toggle, which the
fork writes at every boot and Breeze writes after installing it.
switch/breeze/qlaunch.zip is no longer used, and the HomeRestart Off button
is gone from the main menu.

Downloads wait on a progress screen

Installing the SwitchU fork, updating the cheat database and updating Breeze
now run behind a progress window. It shows megabytes downloaded, then
Installing file N of M, ignores every button until the work is done, and ends
with the result and OK. HOME can't be blocked, so don't press it during a
download.

  • A failed download is reported instead of installed. An HTTP error page used
to be saved as the cheat database or extracted as a Breeze update, and the
cheat database version was recorded even when its download failed.
  • Extracting a zip that is missing or unreadable now fails instead of crashing.
