Updating now happens in the launcher only

The mod used to update itself from inside the game, and the launcher updated separately. Two updaters for one product is what caused most of the recent update problems: they disagreed about what "installed" meant, raced over the same files, and each could only do half the job - the in-game one replaced Client.dll but could not touch the launcher, so an update reported success while the launcher stayed on the old build.

The in-game updater is now disabled. The launcher does the whole thing: it runs before the game starts, so it can replace the game files freely, and it can replace itself through a short external step. Neither is safely possible from inside a running game.

If you do not have the launcher, you will still be offered it once when the game starts, and you can install rVclient by hand from rvclient.com at any time.

From 1.7.24

  • The launcher updates itself properly - progress bar, automatic restart, and the version actually changes afterwards.
  • The version stamp was excluded from the file copy, so the launcher kept reading its old version and reported itself out of date after every successful update.
  • Version formats never matched between the stamp and the launcher.
  • "Check for Updates" opened a web page instead of installing.
  • Old files are removed before the new ones are unpacked, so nothing dropped between versions lingers.
  • "No rVclient found in your game folder" appeared next to working installs.
  • The launcher finds your install without a configured game path.

Known limitations

  • The launcher's Friends tab is placeholder data for now.
  • Friends seeing "Launch Game" instead of "Join"? That is Discord > User Settings > Activity Privacy, not the mod.
