The launcher now updates itself properly
Pressing Check for Updates used to update the game files and report success, while the launcher itself stayed on the old build - so the version in the corner never changed and it read as the update not working. It now updates both.
What happens now: a progress bar in the app while everything downloads, then a prompt to restart. The launcher closes, replaces itself, and reopens automatically. Your settings, mute list and logs are kept.
Why it needed a restart at all: a running launcher holds its own files open, so nothing inside it can replace them. Everything is downloaded and staged first, so the moment where files are actually swapped is a fast local move rather than a 78 MB download.
Fixes behind that
- The version stamp was never updated. It was excluded from the file copy on the assumption something else rewrote it - nothing did, so the launcher kept reading its old version and reported itself out of date after every successful update.
- Version formats never matched. The stamp stored a release tag while the launcher held a bare version number; compared directly they could never be equal.
- The launcher now reports the build actually running, not what was last written to disk. Immediately after an update those differ, because Windows keeps a running program's image in memory.
- "Check for Updates" opened a web page instead of installing anything, while a working installer sat unused beside it.
- Old files are removed before the new ones are unpacked. Overlaying only ever added and overwrote, so anything dropped between versions lingered and got loaded alongside the new build.
- "No rVclient found in your game folder" appeared next to working installs, because the version was read from a resource
Client.dlldoes not have. - The launcher no longer needs a configured game path to find your install - it sits next to the game, so it locates it on its own.
Known limitations
- The launcher's Friends tab is placeholder data for now.
- Friends seeing "Launch Game" instead of "Join"? That is Discord > User Settings > Activity Privacy, not the mod.
