Global chat is now actually global

Global chat only ever reached people on your own server - so it behaved much like Nearby, minus the distance limit. It now reaches everyone, whichever server they are on.

Why it was broken: voice, Nearby and Global all shared a single chat room, and that room has to be scoped to your game server. ODIN positions are bare world coordinates with no server identity, so a shared room would show a stranger from another server as standing next to you. Global was quietly caught by the same scoping.

The fix: Global now uses a second, independent room that everyone shares, joined the first time you send a Global message. It carries text only - no voice, no positions - so proximity voice and Nearby stay exactly as they were, pinned to your server.

Incoming messages are tagged by the room they arrived on rather than by a field in the message, so a client on another server cannot post into your Nearby feed. Older clients still work; their Global messages simply stay server-local as before.

Also in 1.7.17 (if you skipped it)

  • The rVclient launcher (beta) - text chat, wardrobe and audio settings without opening the game.
  • rvclient:// invite links that never expire.
  • Voice mute now mutes voice, not just text.
  • Rejoining a server from Discord works - the invite no longer reads "already joined".
  • The Discord Join button works.

Known limitations

  • The launcher's Friends tab is placeholder data for now - real friends are coming in a future version.
  • Friends seeing "Launch Game" instead of "Join"? That is Discord > User Settings > Activity Privacy, not the mod. Both people need activity sharing enabled.
