Please use the esp8266-display-example.yaml if you want to use a generic ESP8266 plus a level shifter (3.3 -> 5V) to interface the inverter via the TTL-WIFI port. If you want to convert your WiFi dongle to the alternative firmware please flash esp8266-wifi-dongle-example.yaml to your dongle. Don't forget to backup the stock firmware.
