Together, the two #954 changes below let you preview how much of the Sun will be obscured from
your location during a solar eclipse, including the total eclipse of 12 August 2026.

Added

  • A Show true-to-life sizes setting (off by default) that renders the Sun, Moon, and planets at their real computed angular size instead of the fixed, exaggerated-for-visibility constants, so eclipses render to scale. Size is recomputed every frame — decoupled from the per-body position-update throttle — so the setting takes effect immediately and the Moon's size tracks its continuously changing distance (#954)

Fixed

  • The Moon's position used only geocentric coordinates, ignoring the observer's location on Earth (diurnal parallax) and causing errors of up to ~1° — roughly two lunar diameters. Added Universe/Moon.getTopocentricRaDec and switched the renderer to use it (#954)
  • Overlapping sky map labels are now detected and offset, keeping crowded regions readable (#944, #764)
  • Deep-sky object icons sporadically failed to render: ImageObjectManager only sized its texture arrays in the fullReload branch of reload(), but layers loading data asynchronously take the partial path (#952)
  • Vega's Simplified Chinese label identified it as Alpha Aquilae (天鹰座 α) rather than Alpha Lyrae (天琴座 α) (#951)

Changed

  • Redrew the stars and constellations sidebar icons, which previously reused the platform favorite and share glyphs and were easy to confuse (#955)
  • Removed the dead show_planetary_images point-primitive fallback path, which had no UI ever wired to it (#954)
