Summary

Lighthouse v8.4.0-rc.0 is an experimental release that adds builder bid streaming for Gloas.

📡 Builder Bid Streaming

From Gloas, the beacon node asks each external builder for a bid at block production time. It sends one getExecutionPayloadBid request per builder and waits up to 400ms for the responses.

With bid streaming, the beacon node opens a websocket to each builder about one second before the slot. The builder sends a new bid each time it improves its block, and each new bid replaces the previous one. At block production, Lighthouse considers the latest bid from each builder.

To enable bid streaming, add this flag to the beacon node:

--builder-bid-streaming

How it works:

• Lighthouse opens streams only to the builders in the builder_preferences that the validator client submits for an upcoming proposal.
• Bidding closes at the slot start. Lighthouse sends the deadline in the Date-Milliseconds and X-Timeout-Ms headers.
• Lighthouse validates a streamed bid with the same checks as an HTTP bid.
• If the stream does not connect, the builder refuses it, or the last streamed bid is invalid, Lighthouse requests the bid over HTTP. If the stream connects but the builder sends no bid, Lighthouse does not use HTTP for that builder.
• If a builder returns 404 or 405, Lighthouse uses HTTP for that proposal. It tries the stream again at the next proposal slot.
• Each stream has limits on message size, message count and total bytes.

CLI Changes

• Beacon node: New flag --builder-bid-streaming. It is experimental and off by default. It has an effect only after the Gloas fork.
