v0.2.5 — Native keyboard, keycap prompts, less stutter, widescreen

The first release with community contributions: thank you to JollyRoger606 for pull requests #2–#5.

New

  • Native keyboard and mouse buttons on PC (#2). While a level is played, keys reach the game as a PC keyboard instead of through an emulated controller, with live rebinding. Controllers work as before. gow2_native_keys turns it off.
  • Prompts follow your device (#3). Button prompts switch live between controller buttons and your keyboard bindings depending on what you use. With a keycap pack they show drawn keycaps (generated from your own copy of the game with scripts/build-keycaps.ps1 from the source repository, which needs Python); without one they show text labels, as before. gow2_keycaps, gow2_prompts.
  • Real widescreen (Hor+) (#5) up to 1680x704 internally: a wider field of view instead of 16:9 with bars, with the full-width menu bars widened too. gow2_widescreen = "auto" turns it on for displays wider than 16:9 on NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. On AMD it stays 16:9 for now, because the default AMD render path still shows artifacts above 1280 wide (help with testing is welcome: docs/WIDESCREEN_AMD_TESTING.md); you can force it with gow2_widescreen = "21:9" and render_target_path_d3d12 = "rov".

Performance

  • Less stutter (#4). The renderer no longer waits for every pipeline that is still compiling at the end of each frame, which could freeze a frame for 300 ms or more the first time an effect appeared (aiming, firing). Those draws now appear a frame or two later instead. d3d12_pipeline_wait_at_submission_end = true brings the old behaviour back.
  • NVIDIA: the ROV render target path is now the default (measured on an RTX 5080 at 1440p internal: 6-11 ms of GPU time per frame instead of 13-26 ms). AMD keeps its path. render_target_path_d3d12 = "rtv" restores the old one.

Fixes

  • Texture packs: a reference to a directory entry outlived the iterator step while scanning textures\...\replace (SDK patch 0004).

Verified on 2026-10-20

PC (Windows 11, RX 7800 XT): the four contributions build and run together; 30 fps steady at the title screen, prompts follow the controller, text labels without a keycap pack, no errors. Host tests: all 5 steps pass. The Android APK builds; Android is unchanged apart from what the shared code fixes. Not yet tested here: the native keyboard during a full level, and widescreen (our monitor is 16:9).
