The screen saver control could start one but never stop it, and the sensor beside it read false throughout.

The screen saver control now works in both directions. Nothing turns a screen saver off - tvpower publishes
turnOnScreenSaverand theregisterScreenSaverRequestpair, and no more - so pressing the control a second time calledturnOnScreenSaveragain, which the service refuses as busy. It is now dismissed with a key press, which the screen saver consumes before anything behind it sees, leaving the app underneath untouched. (#83) -
The screen saver sensor read the foreground app, which does not change while a screen saver draws, so it reported false throughout.
getPowerStatereports a running screen saver as a state of its own, and that is what it reads now. Confirmed on webOS 4.4.3 and webOS 9.2.2. (#83)
