Tisty 1.7.0
Two machines, and the second one no longer starts from nothing.
Pointing Tisty at a shared folder used to mean finding the path yourself. The
window now offers the four it can recognise — Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud,
Dropbox — by the folder each one actually keeps on this machine: an environment
variable on Windows, ~/Library/CloudStorage on macOS, Dropbox's own info.json.
Of Drive it takes My Drive and never the per-machine backup section, because two
computers pointed there would never meet. A folder chosen by hand gets a Tisty of
its own inside it, unless it already holds a store. And what cannot be placed is
said out loud rather than guessed at: a folder nothing syncs looks exactly like
one that works, right up until the other machine never answers.
The welcome asks two things now instead of five. Start-up and the tray were
questions with an obvious answer, so they became the answer; the last screen did
nothing but ask permission to open the guide, so the guide opens.
Underneath that is the change that made the second machine work at all. A fresh
install wrote its starting lists before anything else, and a store with events in
it is not new any more — adopting a folder that already held another machine
would have meant throwing one of the two histories away. The lists now wait until
the welcome has said where the copies go. With the store still empty, the
folder's identity is adopted and everything comes home, along a path the sync had
all along.
The guide is one per person rather than one per machine. It travels through the
shared folder like any other document, and a second one was planted on every
machine that opened for the first time. Six computers, six guides. It is now
recognised by the title of the guide shipped inside the binary, and taken as it
is.
Two smaller ones. Choosing English planted the guide in Spanish: keep_locale
wrote the config while the guide read a copy of the locale held in the session,
refreshed only on a snapshot. And Tisty looks for a newer version when it opens,
not only once a day — a copy that lives in the tray for weeks was asking at most
once, whenever a settings window happened to be opened. Nothing is retried on
failure: the next look is the next cycle, or the next time it opens.
