Tisty 1.0.3
Adding to the end of a document was not editing it, and calling it that papered
over a gap: a line that turned out wrong stayed wrong, and correcting it meant a
paragraph underneath saying so. An assistant can now change a passage of a
document — correct a sentence, put lines into the middle, take a line out.
It has to name the passage as you wrote it, character for character, and it has
to match exactly one place. Two matches or none writes nothing and says which.
That is not fussiness, it is the whole safeguard: an assistant working from what
it read a minute ago fails to find its text and stops, instead of writing over
what you typed in the meantime. Handing a document a whole new body stays shut,
and naming the entire body as the passage is refused too — a passage can be
checked against what is written, a body cannot. What an edit replaced is copied
beside the documents first; that copy has no button in the window yet, so it is
a file you can rescue by hand, not an undo, and this release does not pretend
otherwise.
Then the part that was assumed and is now measured. Documents were the one thing
in Tisty with two writers and no traffic light: the window saves the body it has,
a sync round brings the body another machine has, an assistant reads a body and
writes it back. Every one of them passes a single lock now, kept beside the
documents. The lock added last release only held assistants back, which sounds
like caution and was not: the window could still write into the gap between an
assistant's read and its write, and the assistant would then save what it read
before, over what you had just kept. Six assistants writing at the same instant
were run at it as separate processes; six lines landed. Syncing holds it per
document rather than per round, so a long round never keeps the editor waiting,
and it is the one writer that carries on unheld rather than stall — a round that
skipped a body comes back for it, and the weave settles what the miss left.
Three smaller things the same audit turned up. The instructions an assistant
reads still said it never edits what you wrote, which stopped being true the
moment editing shipped, and a model given contradictory instructions does
whatever it likes. A passage copied out of a document written on Windows carries
its carriage returns, and Tisty was refusing it for carrying control characters —
punishing an assistant for copying faithfully. And a writer that met the lock
answered with an internal code rather than a sentence.
What is still open is written down rather than left implied: if you are typing
in a document with unsaved changes while an assistant edits it, the window leaves
your text alone and then saves over the edit. Closing that means the editor
reconciling on save, which is a change to the editor and not another lock.
The number stays in the 1.0 line, as it will until the door opened in 1.0.0
works the way it was announced.
