Rescuezilla is an actively developed fork of the Redo Backup and Recovery project.

Flash the Rescuezilla image to a USB stick using balenaEtcher (this will erase all data on your USB stick). Reboot your PC and boot from USB. Read the frequently asked questions, limitations and check below for what’s new, and any bug advisories.

Rescuezilla is currently only suitable for backup and restore of whole hard drives. It is not yet well-suited for restoring partitions individually, as might be desired for users with dual-boot systems. Even with this limitation Rescuezilla is still useful for many end-users.

Rescuezilla v2.0 has added support for backup and restoring images in Clonezilla format, in addition to restoring single partitions individually.

Backwards compatibility

Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 is able to restore backups created by Redo Backup and Recovery v0.9.8, v0.9.9, v1.0.0, v1.0.1, v1.0.2, v1.0.3, v1.0.4, Rescuezilla v1.0.5.0/v1.0.5.1/v1.0.6, as well as backups created by the old, unofficial Redo Backup v1.0.4 updates by Sourceforge users OAM775, chcatzsf and louvetch. Importantly, backups created by Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1, v1.0.6, v1.0.5.1 and v1.0.5.0 cannot be restored using any prior versions of Redo Backup. Rescuezilla v1.0.6's improvements to handling paths with special characters and other bug fixes means that all users will always have the best experience if sticking with v1.0.6+ for any restore operation.

Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 does not support restoring Clonezilla's image format. Support was added in Rescuezilla v2.0.

Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 does not support restoring Redo Rescue 2.x/3.x image format. Support will be added once other higher priorities tasks have been completed.

In short, Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 can restore backups created by all Redo Backup and Recovery and Rescuezilla versions, and you should be using the latest version of Rescuezilla..

Limitations

Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 continues to only officially support backing up and restoring entire disks. Backing up and restoring individual partitions is not recommended because there is not yet the ability to select individual partitions to restore (it's restore everything which was backed up or nothing). This issue has been fixed in the latest release.

Bug advisories

Rescuezilla is thoroughly tested using Windows, Linux, and Mac environments. The following are known bugs in v1.0.6.1. Please regularly consult the following table in case new bugs are discovered.

Severity Tracking # Description Fixed in release
Low #84 Attempting to backup data to a SMB/CIFS "samba" network share hosted on Ubuntu 20.04 does not work due to a stale file handle. Rescuezilla generates a clear error message directing users to read issue #84. Other samba servers eg, on Ubuntu 19.04 and Ubuntu 18.04 work completely fine. v2.0
Low #90 The "search network" button to automatically find network shares does not work. This issue affected Redo Backup and Recovery v1.0.4 but it had been too low a priority to worry about. The simple workaround has been to enter the SMB/CIFS details manually. After deliberation, the search network function has been removed in future versions in favor of a more polished improved SMB/CIFS user-interface. v2.0
Low #96 Rescuezilla only supports restoring disks to a equal or larger size disk. On a GPT disk, using GParted to shrink partitions then restoring it to a disk smaller than the original will lead to the outcome described in #96. All data is of course safe, simply restore to a disk equal to a larger than the original. Fixed in Recuezilla v2.0. v2.0
Low #29 If an unexpected error situation occurs, it may not be handled at all, not even having a message dialogue box to explain why. This issue will be finally be fully resolved now that the significant rearchitecting planned for Rescuezilla v2.0 has been completed. v2.0

Rescuezilla v2.0 rectifies the issues above.

If you encounter any additional bugs, please report them (ideally with logs) on the GitHub issues page (after searching for duplicate issues). Rescuezilla is developed with your support on Patreon.
