Version 1.0.6 (2020-06-17)

  • Added 64-bit version (this fixes the slow transfer rates issue on systems with >16GB RAM) (#3)
  • Added support for booting on EFI-only machines (including with Secure Boot enabled) [64-bit only] (#1)
  • Switched ISOLINUX bootloader to GRUB affecting all boot approaches: BIOS, EFI and CD-ROM
  • Upgraded OS base to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal) from 18.04 LTS (Bionic) [64-bit only] (#51)
  • Ubuntu 20.04 has dropped 32-bit, so Rescuezilla 32-bit remains based on Ubuntu 18.04
  • Fixed issue preventing backup/restore of hard drives smaller than typically ~40 megabytes (#55)
  • Fixed broken GRUB backup affecting some 1MiB-aligned filesystems on MBR-formatted disks, by copying all of “post-MBR gap” between MBR and first partition, not just typical 32KiB. (#50)
  • Added GRUB packages to assist users who want to use Rescuezilla to perform a GRUB repair (#50)
  • Fixed a “stuck at 0%” issue when paths contain certain special characters (#15)
  • Removed false menu items such as “(Windows Boot Manager, )” by correctly merging items (#69)
  • Removed restrictions which prevented users entering special characters in filenames and paths
  • Fixed use of silver “Bluebird” theme, replacing the dull grey default used by v1.0.5/v1.0.5.1 (#48)
  • Increased logging of internal commands for improved ability to track down reported bugs
  • Writes the log file into destination directory (so it always persists between reboots) (#61)
  • Improved the error message when a mount (of CIFS/SMB network share) fails
  • Adds boot menu item to enter “BIOS” firmware setup [EFI-boot only]
  • Replaced Redo Backup logo with new Rescuezilla logo (with “Tux” pengiun mascot) (#62)
  • Switched ISO naming to eg, “rescuezilla-1.0.6-32bit.iso” from “redobackup-livecd-1.0.6.iso”
  • Installs Rescuezilla frontend as a deb package, which increases flexibility of installation (#13)
  • Moved scripts from tertiary File Hierarchy Standard (eg, /usr/local/sbin/rescuezilla) to secondary FHS (eg, /usr/sbin/rescuezilla) as the rationale that scripts were “developed by the system administrator of the system it is deployed on” is no longer valid when installing as a deb package
  • Minimized divergence of Rescuezilla 32-bit and 64-bit package environment: (see below)
  • Replaced Chromium Web Browser with Firefox to avoid Ubuntu 20.04 snap-based packaging as snaps cannot yet be installed in chroot-based environments (which the Rescuezilla build uses)
  • Replaced unsupported ‘leafpad’ text editor with similarly lightweight ‘mousepad’ text editor, as 'leafpad' not available on Ubuntu 20.04
  • Removed ‘maximus’ auto-maximize package (as behavior replaced by OpenBox config in v1.0.5)
  • Added Patreon as a second Firefox homepage, to help achieve sustainable funding

Note: All users please be advised that the original developer of Redo Backup and Recovery has recently resurfaced after a 7.5 year absence to release a incompatible update named Redo Rescue. From when I first began systematically reviving the the abandoned Redo Backup and Recovery project in 2019, I have continually tried many times to contact the original author but thought I never received a response, so I reluctantly released my work as a fork named Rescuezilla. I began to provide everybody interested with new features, bugs fixes, backwards compatibility and world-class user support. Despite the return of the original author and his release of an incompatible version, I will still continue to develop Rescuezilla.

Rescuezilla v1.0.7, which should be released within the next 3 months and is planned to be a major upgrade, including the ability to surgically restore individual partitions, and adding support to backup/restore drives in Clonezilla image format and will start the process for Rescuezilla to be made widely available through Linux distribution package managers.

Backwards compatibility

Rescuezilla v1.0.6 is able to restore backups created by Redo Backup and Recovery v0.9.8, v0.9.9, v1.0.0, v1.0.1, v1.0.2, v1.0.3, v1.0.4, Rescuezilla v1.0.5.0, Rescuezilla v1.0.5.1, as well as backups created by the old, unofficial Redo Backup v1.0.4 updates by Sourceforge users OAM775, chcatzsf and louvetch. Importantly, backups created by Rescuezilla v1.0.6, v1.0.5.1 and v1.0.5.0 cannot be restored using any prior versions of Redo Backup. Rescuezilla v1.0.6's improvements to handling paths with special characters and other bug fixes means that all users will always have the best experience if sticking with v1.0.6 for any restore operation.

Limitations

Rescuezilla v1.0.6 only officially supports backing up and restoring entire disks. Backing up and restoring individual partitions is not recommended because there is not yet the ability to select individual partitions to restore (it's restore everything which was backed up or nothing). This will be fixed in #46

See here for a full list of Rescuezilla's limitations. Rescuezilla is still very useful for entire disk backup/restore use-cases for most typical end-users. The application is being actively developed and will eventually solve all these limitations.

Bug advisories

Rescuezilla is thoroughly tested using Windows, Linux, and Mac environments. The following are known bugs in v1.0.6. Please regularly consult the following table in case new bugs are discovered.

Severity Tracking # Description Fixed in release
Low #84 Attempting to backup data to a SMB/CIFS "samba" network share hosted on Ubuntu 20.04 does not work due to a stale file handle. Rescuezilla v1.0.6 generates a clear error message directing users to read issue #84. Other samba servers eg, on Ubuntu 19.04 and Ubuntu 18.04 work completely fine. This issue has been resolved by switching to the Python programming language for Rescuezilla v2.0. v2.0
Low #87 Shutdown and reboot is far slower than before on the 64-bit version (which is based on the Ubuntu 20.04 operating system). This report is being investigated. As an immediate workaround, if you have less than 16GB of RAM you may wish to use Rescuezilla v1.0.6 32-bit version, which continues to be based on the Ubuntu 18.04 operating system and has near-instantaneous shutdown and reboot. This is fixed in Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1. v1.0.6.1
Low #90 The "search network" button to automatically find network shares does not work. This issue affected Redo Backup and Recovery v1.0.4 but it had been too low a priority to worry about. The simple workaround has been to enter the SMB/CIFS details manually. After deliberation, the search network function has been removed in future versions in favor of a more polished improved SMB/CIFS user-interface. v2.0
Low #99 French/German/Spanish keymap no longer correctly selected after the switch to to the GRUB bootloader. However, application language still correctly selected of course. This is fixed in Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1. v1.0.6.1
Low #96 Rescuezilla only supports restoring disks to a equal or larger size disk. On a GPT disk, using GParted to shrink partitions then restoring it to a disk smaller than the original will lead to the outcome described in #96. All data is of course safe, simply restore to a disk equal to a larger than the original. This issue has been resolved with the significant improvements completed for Rescuezilla v2.0. v2.0
Low #98 Shortcuts and file associations to the mousepad text editor are broken as they still point to the leafpad text editor. This is fixed in Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1. v1.0.6.1
Low #29 If an unexpected error situation occurs, it may not be handled at all, not even having a message dialogue box to explain why. This issue has been resolved with the significant improvements completed for Rescuezilla v2.0. v2.0

Rescuezilla v1.0.6.1 rectifies some key issues above.
