DO NOT USE!

The theme for this update: performance improvements (sometimes dramatic).

The Toob Plugins now automatically choose between binaries optimized for Pi 4 (ARM Cortex-A72), and Pi5 (ARM Cortex-A76). This provides across-the-board improvements, but may provide up to 2x better performance when using TooB Neural Amp Modeler on a Raspberry Pi 5.

TooB Neural Amp modeler has also switched to using the NeuralAudio NAM library, instead of the Neural Amp Modeler Core library. NeuralAudio provides better performance when using NAMs implementations provided by comparable NAM libraries, including the former TooB NAM code. You should see modest, but worthwhile improvements in Pi 4 performance, in addition to what are expected to be dramatic performance improvements on Pi 5.

If you are using a cousin of a Pi 5 (such as an Orange Pi 5 Plus), you should also see the effects of the Pi 5 optimizations. Any SBC with an ARM Cortex 8.2a processor should benefit from the Pi 5 optimizations.

TooB Neural Amp Modeler also provides a new "Threaded" switch. When turned on, NAM computation for that plugin instance is performed in a separate thread from the main audio thread, at the expense of one additional buffer delay. This allows all four CPUs to be used in parallel when using multiple instances of TooB Neural Amp Modeler in a single preset, and therefore allows you to run many more instances of TooB Neural Amp Modeler than you could otherwise. (Up to five on a Pi 4, and more instances than you could ever reasonably use on a Pi 5).

Please report your experiences with the new and improved TooB Neural Amp Modeler (good or bad) in the PiPedal discussion forums. I am particularly interested in confirmation of the 2x performance improvement when using TooB Neural Amp Modeler on a Pi 5. I don't have a Pi 5 I can test on at the moment, although that has suddenly become a urgent necessity, rather than a luxury to look forward to. (Sponsorship contributions in support of that would be welcome!)

Bug fixes:

  • Important improvements to recovery from audio underruns and overruns.
  • Compatibility fixes for plugins that expect behavior compatible with the MOD-Audio host.
  • Fixes for a bug that caused inappropriate changes to the currently-selected plugin when when adding, moving removing or deleting pedalboard plugins.
