Modern boards get a "Group by" menu button, sticky lane labels and collapsible lanes. A click on a draggable card that drifts a few pixels now opens the card action instead of starting a drag. A board page no longer embeds every card's record in its HTML: a flat board with 125 cards drops from 2.6 MB to 1.0 MB. Classic boards are unchanged.
An app that read $data.state from its own Alpine code on a Modern board loses it; it was never part of the design contract.
