Dear Praat users,
you can now download Praat version 5.2 from www.praat.org.
Stefan de Konink and Franz Brauße helped me to construct a new Praat edition for Linux, namely one that uses the GTK widget set; the somewhat outdated Motif edition, which had trouble with Unicode and international alphabets, is no longer supported.
The signal processing now includes convolution, autocorrelation, and cross-correlation.
The graphics has more support for international alphabets now.
The most useful new advanced feature is probably the Demo window. This is a new interactive window that you can program with a normal Praat script. The Demo window understands all Praat's drawing commands and can interact with the user via mouse clicks, key presses, and pause forms. You can use the Demo window to build things like:
- listening experiments whose behaviour depends on what the listener does
- demonstrations
- simulations of learning
- conference presentations (no lost sound files as in PowerPoint...)
best wishes,
Paul
