Dear Praat users,
you can now download Praat version 5.3 from www.praat.org.
We now have 64-bit editions for Linux and Windows, so that you can have more than 2 gigabytes of sounds, spectra and pitches in your object list. No more “not enough memory” messages! You need a 64-bit operating system to use these editions. A 64-bit edition for MacOS will be created in the coming year. Of course version 5.3 still comes in 32-bit editions as well.
The menu names and command names for opening and saving files have become more usual: the Open menu instead of the Read menu; Save commands instead of Write commands (in scripts the old commands will still work, so don’t worry there).
In TextGrids and in the Picture window you can now use more phonetic symbols, such as ^h for aspiration.
Listening experiments: you can now use pictures (instead of only texts) on the buttons. The experiment now also records reaction times, though you are advised to test their precision on your computer before relying on them.
The scripting language: a better beginner's tutorial, and you can now use “indexed variables” such as x [1]
, text$ [i]
, and mat [row, col]
.
Best wishes,
Paul
