Faster installs from a link when the file host is throttling, honest
progress for "Upload and install", and a data-loss guard that was not
arming on the link path.
- Installing from a link no longer runs at the speed of its slowest
connection. We fetch a package in eight parallel connections. Some file
hosts serve one of them quickly and throttle the rest, and we used to give
each connection a fixed share and wait for all of them — so a connection
that finished in a second then sat idle for twenty while a throttled one
crawled. Connections now pull work from a shared queue, so a fast one keeps
going instead of waiting. On the measured pattern that is about 4x. - A connection the host has throttled is now dropped and reopened, which
is what a download manager does and a normal HTTP client does not. Some
hosts slow a connection permanently once it has carried enough data. - A host asking us to slow down no longer fails the install. A "too many
requests" reply was treated as a dead connection, retried four times in a
second and then given up on. It now waits as long as the host asks. - "Upload and install" shows real progress. It reported 0 bytes and 0%
for the entire install — for hours on a large game — while the PS5 was
installing perfectly. It had no way to identify the package it was
watching. It now shows GB, speed and time remaining like every other
install. - Installs show the download and the send speed separately, so when one
is slow you can see which. The "PS5 is installing" stage shows GB done,
speed and time remaining too, instead of a bare percentage. - Fixed a way to lose an installed game. A PS5 patch installed from a
link was labelled as a PS4 full game, which stopped the safety check that
keeps a patch from overwriting its base game. A patch shares its base's
identity, so that check is the only thing standing between a failed patch
and a deleted game.
Verified on a real console: a 101 GB PS5 game installed from an http link at
about 103 MB/s — the speed of the network link itself — and launched. If your
own link installs are still slow, the limit is the file host, not ps5upload:
the same package over a fast link saturates the connection.
