Installing from a link was many times slower than it should have been.
Fixed, and installs now tell you what they are actually doing.
- Install from http/https was crawling. Every chunk we requested opened a
brand-new connection to the server instead of reusing the one already open.
A 3 GB install made around 800 of them, and each one had to start from
scratch and get up to speed before being thrown away — so it never reached
full speed at all. One user measured 1.9 MB/s in ps5upload while a download
manager pulled the same file at 40-50 MB/s on the same connection. Fixed.
How much faster depends on your distance to the server, but it should be a
large difference. - Installs now show download speed and send speed separately. A link
install has two halves — fetching the package to your PC, and feeding it to
the PS5 — and one combined number could never tell you which was slow. - The "PS5 is installing" stage now shows real progress. It was a bare
percentage, and the speed it did show sat at 0 for that whole stage because
it was measuring the wrong thing. It now shows GB done, actual speed, and
time remaining, the same as the transfer stage. - Time remaining is shown for both stages, and left out entirely when there
is no reliable speed to estimate from rather than showing a made-up figure.
