Summary

Challenges

4 new challenges: 3 Nuzlocke-related and 1 for Fresh Start

  • Limited Catch: Only the first Pokémon encountered per biome (i.e. on X1 waves) will be added to the player’s party when caught
  • Exceptions are Gift Pokémon from MEs, which are always allowed
  • Hardcore: Fainted Pokémon will “die” permanently and cannot be revived.
  • Limited Support (3 levels): Choose to disable the automatic party heal during biome transitions (X0 waves), the rewards screen shop, or both
  • Complete a run with Limited Catch, Hardcore, and Fresh Start active at once to earn the new “Nuzlocke” achievement and even a new ribbon!
    • The current sprite is a placeholder and will be changed in a future update
  • New mode for Fresh Start (“Any Starter”) allows picking any starter currently unlocked with standard Fresh Start restrictions. Certain Pokémon are locked to their base form, and all Hidden Abilities are disabled.
    • Current Fresh Start mode renamed to ”Full Reset”, and is still required for the Fresh Start achievement

RIBBONS!

Introduction of new ribbons for accomplishments beyond Classic Mode completion

  • Nuzlocke completion (same unlock criteria as achievement)
  • Max friendship
  • Completing challenge runs for eligible species (tracked per individual challenge)
    • As with achievements, Flip Stats and Inverse Challenge will not unlock other Challenges’ ribbons
    • Only Pokémon eligible for the current challenge can be awarded ribbons. For instance, beating a Mono Gen 1 + Mono Grass run would not give either ribbon to Chikorita, but would give both to Bulbasaur.
  • These new ribbons are tracked per Pokédex species (instead of per starter)
  • Except for the Nuzlocke Ribbon, these are not visible in-game yet (due to lacking both sprites and a dedicated place to view them). However, progress will still be tracked until they are made available.
  • Ribbon tracking is inherited by all pre-evolutions
    • Ex: Finishing a run with Hydrapple will give the ribbon to Dipplin and Applin, but NOT Flapple or Appletun.
  • Classic Ribbons remain the same, with one ribbon (and one Voucher Plus) per starter

QoL

  • Added the ability to change account password from the “Manage Data” menu
    • This will log you out of all other devices
    • Be sure to write down or remember the password! :regidespair:
  • Added the ability to rename or delete runs from the “Load Session” screen
  • Legendary UP! Gacha now shows time left until the next daily rotation
    • Note that the same timer applies to Daily Runs and Pokérus
  • “Transfer Items” menu has been expanded and rechristened as “Manage Items”, now allowing discarding items from party members
  • Defeating the final Pokémon before a biome transition will no longer trigger end-of-turn effects such as Berry consumption and weather damage.

Moves/Abilities

Future Sight and Doom Desire have been fully implemented, with many, many more Moves and Abilities having received minor to major bugfixes in the meantime.

  • While not many new abilities have been implemented, major refactors to many internal systems have paved the way to even more.
With 1.11 and the upcoming Modifier Rework on the horizon, we are getting very close to implementing most of (if not all) remaining un- and partially implemented moves/abilities.
  • As always, if you want to help assist the development process in any way, feel free to give yourself the 'Development' role in #select-roles and head on over to #dev-corner. We are always looking for more volunteers!

Evolution changes

  • Deep Sea Tooth & Deep Sea Scale added as Clamperl-specific items in the Great Ball tier, doubling its Attack and Special Attack respectively.
    • Its evolution now requires it to hold the Deep Sea Tooth (Huntail) or Deep Sea Scale (Gorebyss) and use the Linking Cord (Great Tier)
  • Gallade, Frosslass and Hisuian Lilligant now use Dawn Stone to evolve
    • First 2 match mainline; latter balances out stone evo counts
    • Male Kirlia and Female Snorunt now evolve into Gardevoir and Glalie at their natural levels :thumbsupyu:

Pokedex Changes

Added a new filter for “Encountered Species” in the Pokédex.
The “Seen” stat has been refactored and split into two categories, as following:

  • Caught: anything that the player has caught, hatched, or evolved/form changed. Unchanged
  • Encountered (also referred to as “Fought”): anything that the player has met in the wild or from other trainers
  • Seen: All species you have either caught or encountered.
  • This will probably reduce the player’s number of “encountered” (formerly “seen”) as the previous method would let Pokémon be marked as “seen” by evolving or changing forms. The new max possible Encountered stat is 1080, with Phione and Arceus being the only unavailable ones.

Balance

  • Your usual amount of Egg Move, Passive and Cost changes
  • 6 MEs have been adjusted: A Trainer’s Test, The Expert Pokémon Breeder, The GTS, The Strong Stuff, Trash to Treasure, Weird Dream.
  • Evil Leader Changes and Champion teams have been adjusted, as well as the difficulty of early standard trainers
  • A lot more other small changes (see #balance-changelog for more info)

Miscellaneous

Added Antique Form Sinistea and Polteageist, Artisan Form Poltchageist and Masterpiece Form Sinistcha. Sprites are not yet distinguishable.

Added the color red 🟥

🕹️Gameplay

  • Three new challenges related to Nuzlocke mode have been added

    • Limited Catch: Prevents Pokémon from being added to the party on any wave that isn't the first wave in a biome (X1 waves).
      • Extra Pokémon can still be caught, just not added to the party
      • Gift Pokémon from Mystery Encounters can be added to the party regardless of wave
    • Hardcore: Prevents fainted Pokémon from being revived.
      • Revival items will not appear in the shop or rewards screen, and (if somehow spawned in) will have no effect on fainted Pokémon.
      • DNA Splicers will be unable to select fainted Pokémon for fusing.
      • Revival blessing will fail and be blacklisted from Metronome if used by a player.
      • Disables following MEs: Dark Deal, The Expert Pokémon Breeder
    • Limited Support: Disables the automatic party heal during biome transitions (after X0 waves) and/or the shop after every wave; that is, you can choose to disable either one or both at the same time
  • Expanded Fresh Start to include an “Any Starter” mode

    • Follows same restrictions as current Fresh Start (No Egg Moves, Passives or Hidden Abilities, no shiny or variants, Neutral nature, IVs are capped to 15, Tera Type set to primary)
    • Pokémon with 2 non-Hidden Abilities can choose freely between them
    • Pichu, Pikachu, Eevee, Rotom, Meloetta, and Froakie are locked to their base form
    • Zygarde is locked to one of its Aura Break forms
    • Current Fresh Start mode with only First Partner Pokémon renamed to ”Full Reset”
      • The “Fresh Start” achievement still requires Full Reset Fresh Start
  • During Challenge runs, the final boss cannot be caught in a Master Ball without weakening it to its last HP bar (the same restriction that other Balls would normally have).

  • A new achievement, "Nuzlocke", requires finishing a run with Permanent Faint, Fresh Start, and Limited Catch challenges toggled on to their max difficulties.

  • A new achievement “A Run A Day…” has been added for Completing a Daily Run. This does not apply retroactively, so go play Daily Run 🥳

  • Ribbons have been greatly expanded

    • A new ribbon has been added for completing the “Nuzlocke” achievement with each species. The current sprite is a placeholder and will be changed in a future update
    • Tracking for ribbons for other challenges has been added; each Challenge grants a different ribbon, with each Monotype and Monogen Challenge granting a unique ribbon.
    • Another special ribbon for reaching 255 friendship with each Pokémon is available too, although the sprite will only be available in a future update
    • Notes:
      • Ribbons are inherited by all pre-evolutions; finishing a Nuzlocke with Gallade will unlock the ribbon for Ralts and Kirlia (but not Gardevoir)
      • Pokémon unavailable in a certain challenge won’t get the ribbons at run completion. For instance, Chimecho won’t earn the Gen 4 ribbon if it evolves during the run; you must finish the run with it as a Chingling
  • “Seen” stat has been refactored and split into two categories, with adjustments to their methods. The new logic goes like this

    • Caught: anything that the player has caught, hatched, or evolved/form changed. Unchanged
    • Encountered (also referred to as “Fought”): anything that the player has met in the wild or from other trainers
    • Seen: the combination of both
    • Notes: This will probably reduce the player’s number of “encountered” (formerly “seen”) as the previous method would let Pokémon be seen by evolving or form changing it. The new max possible Encountered stat is 1080, with Phione and Arceus being the only unavailable ones.
  • Renamed “Transfer Items” option on the post wave screen to “Manage Items”

  • Added Discard Item option in Manage Items menu

  • Defeating the final Pokémon of a final wave will no longer trigger end of turn effects such as berries and weather damage

  • Added Antique Form Sinistea and Polteageist, Artisan Form Poltchageist and Masterpiece Form Sinistcha.

  • Some UI/UX improvements in the starter select screen

    • When selecting Fresh Start mode, only options that can be chosen in the run will be visible; passives, hidden abilities, egg moves etc are fully hidden.
    • Various bugs related to the tera button resetting to the first type after being changed have been fixed.

⚖️Balance

Egg Moves & Passives

  • Passive changes for 39 Species/Forms, or 20 Evolution Lines
    • Nidoran-F, Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Mega Ampharos, Murkrow, Skarmory, Slakoth, Vigoroth, Slaking, Latias, Latios, Mega Latios, Jirachi, Honchkrow, Dusknoir, Victini, Zen Darmanitan, Axew, Fraxure, Haxorus, Froakie, Frogadier, Greninja, Ash-Greninja, Litten, Torracat, Incineroar, Togedemaru, Cosmog, Scorbunny, Raboot, Cinderace, G-Max Cinderace, Finizen, Alolan Meowth, and Alolan Persian
  • Egg Move changes for 52 Starters
    • Charmander, Nidoran-F, Growlithe, Machop, Ponyta, Porygon, Kabuto, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Pineco, Skarmory, Tyrogue, Slakoth, Swablu, Turtwig, Shinx, Spiritomb, Regigigas, Shaymin, Patrat, Roggenrola, Minccino, Deerling, Axew, Pawniard, Heatmor, Durant, Honedge, Pikipek, Yungoos, Bounsweet, Kartana, Stakataka, Zeraora, Scorbunny, Nickit, Gossifleur, Stonjourner, Zacian, Zamazenta, Zarude, Tarountula, Tandemaus, Nacli, Maschiff, Cyclizar, Slither Wing, Iron Valiant, Gouging Fire, Alolan Vulpix, and Alolan Geodude
  • Cost changes for 3 Starters
    • Jirachi 7 → 6, Dwebble 2 → 3, Bombirdier 3 → 4
  • A list of all documented changes can be found here!

Mystery Encounters

  • Mystery Encounters won’t appear in waves ending in 1. This won’t affect the average number of Mystery Encounters per run
  • A Trainer’s Test:
    • Updated battle guaranteed rewards:
      • Sacred Ash + Rogue + Ultra → Relic Gold + Rogue + Rogue
    • Additional notes: Not really happy with the current state of their teams, further changes to this ME will happen in the near future after we have more items and better trainer modifiers to work with.
  • The Expert Pokémon Breeder:
    • Changed her Slot 2 and 3 Pokémon to match the Common (Slot 2 list) and Uncommon (Slot 3 list) mons the new Breeder Class has
    • Slightly adjusted the movesets for the Space version of this encounter
      • Cleffa 2 Moonblast → Dazzling Gleam
      • Cleffa 3 Take Heart → Calm Mind
    • Additional notes: Again, hoping this helps reduce the power of a 3v1, we have more changes we want to work out with this soon, it's a really hard one to balance without killing the main gimmick. Also would like to make Cleffa 2 on the Space version an item gimmick special attacker, waiting on #6078 (Modifier Refactor) and item implementations off of that, in 1.11+
  • The GTS
    • Trade option changed to require at least 2 valid Pokémon (as in, not fainted and eligible in battle for the current challenge)
  • The Strong Stuff:
    • Shuckle’s Berry Juice has been split in two to make the effects clearer
      • Previously, the Berry Juice would boost or reduce a Pokémon’s base stats
      • The new Foul Berry Juice item now reduces a Pokémon’s base stats, while the Sweet Berry Juice boosts them
      • This is purely a cosmetic flavor change that helps us with 1.11 and provides more clarity to the player
  • Trash to Treasure
    • Removed 1 of the 2 Leftovers given for choosing Option 1
    • Added Leftovers as a guaranteed reward table item for beating the encounter, replacing the first Rogue Item
      • Rogue + Rogue + Ultra + Great → Leftovers + Rogue + Ultra + Great
    • Additional notes: Got more plans for this, again #6078 (Modifier refactor) can't come sooner. 1.11+ waiting room, enjoy the guaranteed Leftovers, fight the TRASH and win the run or lose the run under garbage.
  • Weird Dream
    • Added Arceus and Phione to the banlist for the Weird Dream ME
    • Added a fourth Nature Mint to the reward screen after choosing Option 1
    • Additional notes: Having been directly involved with Weird Dream's balance before release, very happy with where this one is from a Balance perspective. Of course this ME could be optimized slightly more (adding text for unlocking the passives for the run like "{Pokémon 1} and {Pokémon 2}'s abilities seem stronger after the battle."), but I really do not think any major changes are needed for how the ME functions.

    • Construction Site: 1/4 → 1/6

    • Laboratory: 0 → 1/16
    • Seabed: 1/16 → 0

  • Updated Champion Teams. View changes here
  • Updated Evil Team Leaders. View changes here
  • Team Star’s Starmobiles have had their abilities changed to Overcoat, with their mainline abilities moved to their passives. They’ve also had Shift Gear removed from their set moveset and replaced with Parting Shot, Flame Charge, Toxic Spikes, Misty Terrain and Iron Defense respectively.

    • Clamperl → Huntail: Use the Linking Cord on a Clamperl holding the Deep Sea Tooth.
    • Clamperl → Gorebyss: Use the Linking Cord on a Clamperl holding the Deep Sea Scale
      • Additional notes: If Clamperl holds both Deep Sea items, it will evolve into Huntail
    • Buneary → Lopunny: Now requires 50 friendship instead of 70
    • Cosmog → Cosmoem: Now requires 43 Friendship instead of level 23

  • Rayquaza, Cosmog line, Necrozma, Wyrdeer, Kleavor, Ursaluna, Basculegion, Sneasler and Overqwil had their Catch rates updated to match Gen 9

Misc Balance

  • Enemy AI makes smarter choices on whether it should sacrifice a Pokémon or not based on the move effectiveness, health and speed.
  • Multiple moveset generation adjustments
    • Enemy mons will no longer generate with more than one self-KO move (such as Explosion)
    • Wild mons have the same extra weight towards higher level moves as Trainer mons.
    • Wild mons will be guaranteed to generate with one non-status STAB move, if possible.
  • A few changes diverging from mainline interactions, deemed appropriate by balance team:

🐛Bugfixes

Moves

    • Will no longer fail if used while another effect is hitting a different slot
    • Will not immediately strike when called virtually via Copycat, etc.
    • Now activates before electrify and other effects wear off
    • Activates in proper turn order, aligning with mainline
  • Wish now correctly track positions in double battles and persists across reloads
  • Protect and similar moves’success chance will correctly be reduced if used successfully more than twice in a row, as well as counting uses of Quick/Wide Guard.
  • Court Change will now correctly swap Safeguard and Pledge Effects.
  • Sticky Web used by the opponent will have the correct message
  • Spread and field-targeted moves are no longer blocked by Psychic Terrain if given priority by an ability
  • Status moves like Thunder Wave only show 1x or 0x type hints
  • Transform now fails if the user or target is transformed, and no longer displays duplicate “Transform” messages.
  • Electric/Misty Terrain will show correct messages for blocked moves
  • Metronome and other moves that call other moves now correctly copy charging moves
  • Fog will now properly decrease the healing of Morning Sun/Synthesis/Moonlight and halve the power of Solar Blade/Beam
  • Roar and Whirlwind now display failure messages ("but it failed!"), when used against a trainer with only one Pokémon left. In addition, they now display proper text when switching out
  • Laser Focus and Rest now show correct text on use
  • When hitting a Substitute, recoil damage and Shell Bell will now correctly trigger
  • Moves that suppress abilities, specifically Gastro Acid and Core Enforcer, will now be able to suppress an opponent's passive ability even if its main ability is unsuppressable. The reverse was already true (main ability would be suppressed if passive was unsuppressable), so this is mostly for consistency.
  • Synchronoise now takes into account typing that got changed via Terastalization.
  • Rest, Snore and Sleep Talk now work correctly on the turn the Pokémon wakes up/goes to sleep.
  • Trick Room correctly reverses itself when used while Trick Room is up.
  • Fickle Beam is no longer boosted by Sheer Force

Abilities

  • Moves with variable power (like Crush Grip) correctly get power boost from abilities like Aerilate.

  • Imposter will no longer activate by or against a transformed Pokémon (same as Transform)
  • Protean will work even if terrain blocks a move
  • Anger Point will no longer constantly emit its application message when the first strike of a multi-hit move is a critical hit, will also correctly maximize the user's attack (previously only added +6)
  • Corrosion now affects the user’s held Toxic Orb
  • Shields Down no longer blocks status setting & Yawn in non-Red Core Forms
  • Rock Head will no longer show a message when activating
  • Fixed instances of weather-based form change abilities (Flower Gift, Forecast) reverting if summoned at the same time as another Pokémon’s weather ability
  • Dancer now thaws the user out, respects paralysis & sleep and does not count for things which it shouldn't (ie copying moves).
  • Abilities that activate on summon (like Intimidate) will correctly activate in priority and speed order
  • Gorilla Tactics now activates on protect and on miss
  • Steadfast correctly triggers when a move is interrupted due to flinching, not when flinch is applied.

Misc bugfixes

    • This includes all effects that reset upon switching - stat stages, Frenzy moves, Leech Seed, etc.
  • Fixed a freeze caused by pressing left/right after checking the Pokédex of a Pokémon caught in a Mystery Encounter while the party was full.
  • Fainted Pokémon can now be released from Pokémon menu
  • Deerling and Sawsbuck’s T2 and T3 are now correctly unobtainable (players that have the “variants” will keep the T2 and T3 unlocks)
  • Mystery Encounters disabled in a challenge mode will correctly be encounterable in the rest of the challenge modes
  • Changing forms after swapping a moveset and then starting the game will no longer cause that starter to have an empty moveset. Additionally, loading a save with a Pokémon having no valid moves won’t prevent the save from being loaded
  • Fixed a bug where the evolution phase would show only the base Pokémon's name in a fusion. Evolutions will also no longer show the regional form name if it has one (e.g. Alolan Ninetales)
  • Fixed a bug where no Exp. would be awarded from Exp. All if the active Pokémon was KO'd along with opponent (recoil, Explosion, etc)
  • Eggs received from The Expert Pokémon Breeder will no longer effectively duplicate the text in the egg source text box
