github open-telemetry/opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation v1.0.0-rc.1

pre-release5 hours ago

Overview

v1.0.0-rc.1 is the first release candidate for OBI's first stable major release. It brings the compatibility contracts developed across the v0 release line into release-candidate validation: configuration, deployment, telemetry, and supported environments.

This candidate starts the RC phase of the stable OBI 1.0 milestone. The final v1.0.0 release remains subject to maintainer validation and signoff; compatibility commitments apply to the explicitly documented stable surfaces.

Highlights

  • Configuration: Config v2, its generated schema, and the documented subset of OpenTelemetry declarative configuration form the proposed v1 configuration contract. See the Config v2 reference.
  • Deployment and upgrades: Documented CLI flags, environment variables, release binaries, and container behavior are covered by the proposed compatibility, versioning, and deprecation rules in VERSIONING.md.
  • Telemetry: The stable registry entries defined by TELEMETRY.md define the v1 telemetry contract, including their OTLP and built-in Prometheus representations. Stability classifications apply independently to signals and attributes.
  • Supported environments: The support matrix documents the kernels, architectures, runtimes, and instrumentation coverage against which the candidate should be evaluated.

Release-impacting changes

  • Config v2 is the configuration model for v1 and has been available in standalone OBI and the Collector receiver since v0.11.0. Config v1 remains supported for backward compatibility, but is frozen and receives no bug fixes or new features. Follow the Config v1 to v2 migration guide, including its unsupported mappings, manual migration cases, and required canary comparison. Full per-process declarative configuration parity remains follow-up work.
  • Telemetry classified as development, alpha, beta, or release_candidate remains outside the stable contract. Network flow attribute names remain excluded pending semantic-convention alignment. Review the known v1 emission limitations and the support matrix before rollout.
  • RCs retain the published 0.14.0 telemetry schema for compatibility with schema consumers. The next schema file will be cut for v1.0.0 final, preserving the existing transformation history.
  • After publication, RC1 must complete at least 14 days of maintainer validation. Acceptance requires green release workflows, verified Linux AMD64 and ARM64 artifacts and container images, validation of Config v2 and the intended telemetry contracts, and confirmation from at least two maintainers. Feedback and blocking regressions will determine whether another candidate is needed before final signoff.
