Full changelog: v5.7.1...v5.8.0-rc.0

What changed since v5.7.1

Upstream: Immich v3.2.4 → v3.3.0. The whole v3.3 line is in this build. The parts you will notice in Gallery:

  • Machine learning: reworked model loading and faster inference, new PP-OCRv6 OCR models, and a fix for wrong results on Intel Arc GPUs (OpenVINO).
  • Albums: album editors can change the title and description (web and mobile), there is a Leave album action on the web, and a keyboard shortcut removes the selected photos from an album.
  • Mobile backup: more reliable iOS background backup, no re-upload of a photo the server already has, and edited photos are stacked over the original on upload.
  • Also: reverse-geocoded country names now come from GeoNames, OAuth sign-in can sync storage label and quota from your provider's claims, and .jfif files are supported.

Gallery:

  • Favourite any photo you can see (#819). Favourites are now per user: you can favourite a photo you don't own (a Space photo, a partner's photo, even as a Space viewer), and nobody else sees your favourites.
  • Space editors can edit other members' photos (#992). A Space Owner or Editor can rotate, crop, trim, use the image editor, and change the date, location, description, rating and tags of photos owned by other members of that Space, and can re-run face/metadata/thumbnail jobs on them. Deleting, archiving and stacking stay with the photo's owner. These edits are recorded in the Space's activity feed (tag changes are not yet).
  • Naming a face that was auto-matched to a Space person keeps the name you typed (#1164).
  • One taken-date and filter rule across the timeline, filter suggestions, map and search (#1158).
  • Memories sync over the new v3.3 sync protocol.

Before you upgrade

Back up your database. On first start the server converts every favourite into the new per-user table and removes the old isFavorite column. It also re-imports the reverse-geocoding data, which costs a few minutes of CPU and memory on the background worker.

Switching back to Immich now targets Immich v3.3.0. The attached revert-to-immich.sql is built for it, but Immich has tagged v3.3.0 without publishing its images yet, so wait for that before trying a switch back. Reverting keeps only the favourites an owner set on their own photos; plain Immich has nowhere to store the rest.

What to test

  1. The upgrade itself. Count your favourites before upgrading and check the same photos are still favourites afterwards. The server should boot cleanly, and background jobs should keep running: thumbnails, metadata, machine learning.
  2. Favouriting photos you don't own.
    • Favourite a photo someone else owns, from a Space and from a partner, via the heart in the viewer, F, multi-select, and the command palette.
    • It should appear in your favourites filter, search and map results. The owner should not see your favourite, and you should not see theirs.
    • Try it as a Space viewer too.
    • Shared-link visitors should see no favourites at all.
    • In the mobile app, the heart should work on photos you don't own, and the Favorites page should include partner and Space favourites.
  3. Editing as a Space editor (web).
    • As Owner/Editor of a Space, open a photo owned by another member. Rotate or crop it, trim a video, and change its date, location, description, rating or tags. The owner should see those changes in the Space activity feed (all except tag changes, which aren't recorded yet).
    • Delete, archive and stack should not be offered on that photo.
    • A Space viewer gets none of these.
    • A photo whose owner is not a member of the Space (for example a partner's photo added to it) must stay read-only.
    • These actions are web-only for now; the mobile app does not offer them yet.
  4. Faces and people. Name a face on a Space photo, including one already auto-matched to a Space person, and check the name sticks. Merging people and reassigning faces should behave as in 5.7.
  5. Memories.
    • Mobile memory lane: check the titles of on-this-day, trip and other generated memories.
    • Memory viewer: it should stay full screen while you swipe between memories.
    • Web: check the memory cards and their subtitles.
    • Older installed apps: they should keep receiving memories with their photos.
  6. Machine learning. Smart search, face detection and recognition, OCR (new PP-OCRv6 models in the OCR model setting under Administration → Settings → Machine Learning Settings), and pet detection and recognition. Please report back if you run Intel Arc (OpenVINO) or NVIDIA (CUDA).
  7. Albums. Rename an album and edit its description as an album editor, on web and mobile. Leave an album you were added to (web). Remove photos from an album with the keyboard shortcut.
  8. Mobile backup, especially iOS background backup. Photos already on the server should not upload again.
  9. Taken-date filters. A date range should give the same results in the timeline, filter suggestions, map and search.
  10. The mobile app against this server.
    • The iOS build on TestFlight and the attached Android APK (gallery-v5.8.0-rc.0.apk) are built from this exact commit. Both report their version as 5.8.0, not 5.8.0-rc.0, because mobile builds are stamped with the release version. They are the release-candidate build regardless of what the About screen says.
    • Apps you already have installed should keep syncing against this server too.

Please back up your database first, and report anything odd on GitHub.
