InstallerClean 3.5.0

InstallerClean can now update itself.

  • When a newer version is out, InstallerClean says so before it shows anything the scan found, with buttons to "Update now" (that's the one) or "Continue without updating" (don't do that!). Update now downloads the newer version, checks it, installs it and opens it again. This works for the setup's copy, the portable and the slim
  • The command-line tool checks for a newer version before it scans. Run by hand, it asks first; run by a scheduled task or a script, it updates itself and runs the command with the newer version, and records what it did in the Application log. /noupdate turns this off
  • The portable and the slim now keep one filename across versions, InstallerClean-portable.exe and InstallerClean-slim.exe, so a copy updates itself where it stands. The setup's filename still carries its version
  • The setup installs even while the command-line tool is running, and where an install fails it puts everything back as it was
  • The downloads load the Windows libraries they use from the Windows system folder, and the slim finds .NET where .NET is installed, where before they looked first in the folder they were run from
  • At a console, the command-line tool can now send the same anonymous report as InstallerClean, after asking
  • Every report now says whether InstallerClean or the command-line tool sent it, and how the copy was installed: setup, portable, slim, Scoop or the command-line tool on its own (the privacy policy lists what a report holds)

The changelog has the full list.

Downloads

  • InstallerClean-portable.exe (~64 MB) - The app as a single executable. No installation; run it directly.
  • InstallerClean-3.5.0-setup.exe (~93 MB) - Installer. Adds InstallerClean and the command-line tool, with an Add/Remove Programs entry to uninstall.
  • installerclean-cli.exe (~37 MB) - The command-line tool as a single executable, for scripting, scheduled tasks and deployment.
  • InstallerClean-slim.exe (~6 MB) - The app as a single small executable, for a PC that already has the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime installed.

The apps are unsigned and freshly downloaded files carry the browser's mark, so on first run Windows SmartScreen will usually warn that the publisher is unknown. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".

Build it yourself

Built with .NET SDK 10.0.113 from the v3.5.0 tag. The portable and the command-line tool are single-file builds published with compression on. Release builds are deterministic, so building that tag yourself, on that SDK and with those flags, gives you the same bytes and the same hashes for the portable and the command-line tool; the README's Checking the download itself section has the detail. The installer is a different case: Inno Setup packs it and stamps the build year into it, so don't expect its hash to match.

VirusTotal

  • InstallerClean-portable.exe: 0/70 ✨
  • InstallerClean-3.5.0-setup.exe: 1*/68
  • installerclean-cli.exe: 0/71 ✨
  • InstallerClean-slim.exe: 1*/69

*I've reported the false positives on the setup and the slim to Deep Instinct and SecureAge respectively. Both files are scanned clean by Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, ESET, Avast, AVG, Malwarebytes and every other engine on VirusTotal.
