v1.2.0 - the Steam Deck update

No game data is included, you need a disc image made from your own copy of the game.

Disc ID
Super Mario Strikers (USA) G4QE01
Mario Smash Football (Europe) G4QP01
Super Mario Strikers (Japan) G4QJ01

Supported formats are .iso and .gcm (NKit or plain), .ciso and Dolphin's .gcz.

Neither .rvz nor .wia is supported. Convert them to ISO in Dolphin first: right-click the game, then Convert File Format....

Multi-language support is available for a JP version of the game.

Setup

  1. Unpack the archive to a folder you can write to. The settings file and the log are saved next to the game.
  2. Open the strikers.settings executable first for your preferences. On the Game tab, press Disc Image..., choose your image and press Save and Play.

Extract Files... is optional. It copies the game files out of the image so you can move or delete the image afterwards.

European discs take their language from the language line in strikers.ini, for example language = german. The other options are English, French, Spanish and Italian.

Saves

Each region has its own memory card, stored in your user folder rather than next to the game:

  • Windows: %APPDATA%
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Super Mario Strikers
  • Linux: ~/.local/share

Reporting a problem

Set log = 1 in strikers.ini and attach the strikers-log.txt it writes. If the game gets stuck on a screen, also run it once with STRIKERS_LOG_SCENES=1.

Notes

This update's notes:

  • Stability fixes: Fixed Cup progression crashes, goal replay hangs in high-scoring matches, and crashes when audio is disabled.
  • Steam Deck: Added dedicated button prompts, automatic fullscreen in Steam Game Mode, an 800p internal rendering default, and better frame pacing.
  • VSync: Fixed motion jitter with VSync enabled and reduced input lag with VSync disabled. VSync now defaults to off for more responsive controls; it can still be enabled in settings or the in-game overlay.
  • Shader compilation: Added a startup shader compilation stage with a progress indicator. Stadiums no longer show an empty scene with pop-in when loading for the first time.
  • Rendering performance: Moved texture conversion into the background and reduced rendering overhead. Every little helps!
  • Languages: The Japanese disc now supports Japanese, English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian, so a Japanese copy of the game can be played in English.
  • Linux: Added experimental OpenGL and OpenGL ES options to settings.
  • Visual fixes: Fixed distorted goal transitions on older hardware, HUD elements remaining visible on widescreen displays, and incorrect menu rendering after resizing the window.
  • Settings polish: Improved VSync descriptions and fixed info button visibility in dark themes. These provide information to non-technical users.

WINDOWS USERS: If you're getting a message that the game is a virus... it's obviously not. Feel free to upload to VirusTotal or a similar site for ease of mind. 'strikers.exe' will get quarantined but go through Windows Defender. Click 'allow on device.' in regard to actions to free the executable to play.

MACOS USERS: run this in Terminal before opening anything, or macOS will block the game and its libraries with "could not be verified". Change the path for your install.
