github mstan/ApeEscapeRecomp v0.5.2
Ape Escape Recompiled v0.5.2

Ape Escape v0.5.2 limits v0.5.1's crowded-scene speed-up to in-level play. In v0.5.1 it applied to all game code, so menus and cutscenes that pace themselves by their own workload flipped frames too early (GitHub #10).

The speed-up now follows the game's own screen-phase byte. The title and startup menu, the stage-select Professor briefing, level intro flyovers and warp-ins run on the original timing again.

Measured on the same build and route, in real time:

  • Title / startup menu: frame timing identical to the unscaled game (v0.5.1 differed).
  • Professor briefing: 63 single-VBlank frame flips, against 64 unscaled and 417 in v0.5.1.
  • Dexter's Island while moving: no slowdown frames, as in v0.5.1 (16 unscaled).

Not yet verified: the stage-clear results screen and in-level boss cutscenes. Reports welcome.

Both packages have the same contents layout, native overlay cache (105 files) and mod catalog as v0.5.1, built from the same framework commit. OpenBIOS is included; supply your legally obtained Ape Escape (USA, SCUS-94423) disc image.
