REX Player v5.5.1 is here! 🎉
This release introduces a much faster file browser, a folder flattening toggle, smarter subtitle search, speed-based remaining time, and separate Home/Back PiP settings. We've also fixed a crash when granting storage access and tightened up player controls and autoplay.
🔥 Faster File Browser
Opening a folder no longer indexes your entire library. Each folder is scanned on its own and cached, so large folders open with no spinner and no frame drops — and they stay fast on every visit instead of just the first.
✨ New Features
- Flatten Folders in Tree View: A setting under Media & Library › File Browser, off by default. Turn it on to collapse folders that hold no media of their own into their single media-bearing child.
- File Extensions in Browser: Choose whether media cards show the file extension alongside the name, from the layout dialog and Settings (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- PiP on Home: Home and Back now have separate Picture-in-Picture controls. Leave Auto Picture-in-Picture off and enable PiP on Home to shrink the player only when pressing Home, while Back closes the player as usual (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Speed-Based Remaining Time: The seekbar clock now accounts for your playback speed, so a two-minute video at 2x shows one minute left. Off by default under Player controls › Seekbar (#472).
- Network Links Cleanup: Recent stream links show a readable name above the full URL, with a Clear all button and correct bottom spacing (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Translations: Updated Arabic strings (by @maqu630).
⚡ Performance & Optimizations
- Instant Folder Opening: Folders are indexed per directory with a fast single-pass scan, and large folders show their contents immediately while metadata fills in the background.
- Tree View Reliability: Folders that haven't been indexed yet now appear with their real contents instead of being hidden, empty folders are no longer listed when audio display is enabled, and blacklisted folders disappear from the list the moment you add them.
- Smoother Cold Start: The last folder you browsed loads instantly on launch, with the app header and breadcrumbs in place right away.
- Lower Memory Overhead: Watched, progress and NEW badges are computed once per folder, and a single library pass replaces repeated lookups of playback history.
🐛 Stability & Bug Fixes
- Storage Permission Crash: Fixed a crash when opening storage settings on devices without an all-files-access page, such as some Android 11 hardware (#471).
- Security Hardening: Removed the in-app APK updater, the add-on update checker, and the preview update channel. Update checks now use the GitHub release feed only, so Play Protect no longer flags the app as potentially harmful.
- Online Subtitle Search: Failures are now explained with the next step instead of a silent empty result — missing or invalid API key, rate limit, network error, or no matches. The API key field has moved to the top of Subtitle Search and search results are more accurate for series and movies.
- Saved Playback Position: Resuming a playlist item part-way through now works again (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Resume Prompt: The resume banner no longer lingers over the next video you open (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Aspect Ratio & Zoom Memory: Container size and zoom are restored correctly for every video instead of carrying over from the previous one (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Player Controls: Controls no longer appear on their own when a video opens or when returning from PiP (#487). (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch)
- Autoplay: Disabling Autoplay on Open is now respected, and controls follow your "Show controls on play" preference instead of appearing on every open (#496). (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch)
- Chapter Indicator: The chapter pill no longer jumps sideways when the controls appear or hide (#497). (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch)
- Locked Player: Tapping while controls are locked now always reveals the slide-to-unlock control.
- Speed Gesture: The multi-speed slider resets cleanly when you change the speed memory mode (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch).
- Remaining Time: No longer freezes when scrubbing while speed-based remaining time is enabled.
- Titles: File extensions are hidden in the player title bar (#495) and in the playlist sheet (#489). (by @quirkyfiesta-glitch)
