A stream that never really breaks but keeps catching itself is the source's playlist, not your connection. Measured here over two minutes: TotalSportek publishes a segment every 4.02s like a metronome, while WatchFooty and TimStreams list four segments — sixteen and thirteen seconds — and publish in bursts, eight seconds of nothing and then two at once, eleven times between them. A player starts three segments from the end of a live playlist, so it holds about twelve seconds of video; one of those pauses spends most of it and the next slow chunk is a stall. Extra Buffer, in /configure or LIVE_BUFFER_SECONDS, hands the player a deeper window of what the source has already published and tells it to start further back in it. Off by default, and off stays exactly as it was.

- streams: an extra buffer for sources that publish in bursts. The segments a source publishes are remembered and kept in what is served after the source drops them — measured on real playlists, a sixteen second window becomes a hundred and four, and all 56 segments in the deepened windows still fetched — and #EXT-X-START tells the player how far back to begin, which ExoPlayer reads before anything else. The live edge never moves and the media sequence only goes forward; a host that deletes a segment when it stops listing it is found out and served its own window unchanged (cbb99c4)
Bug Fixes
- player: stop the web player seeking back to the live edge on healthy streams. liveMaxLatencyDurationCount was 5 where hls.js defaults to no limit at all, so twenty seconds of drift reset playback to the live edge and threw the buffer away — and twenty seconds of drift is ordinary on a source that pauses eight seconds at a time (d69fa01)
