PS5_RetroArch-v4.0.0-beta-4

Important warning

PS5 RetroArch is a passion project, not a piracy project.

It exists so you can play the games you own on the console you own.

  • Piracy is not condoned.
  • No games, BIOS files, console firmware or decryption keys are included, and they never will be.
  • Use only legally obtained backups of games you own, made yourself from your own discs, cartridges or digital purchases.
  • Use only BIOS and firmware files dumped from hardware you own.
  • Requests for, or links to, games, BIOS files, firmware or keys are not welcome in this project's issues or discussions.

Thank you

This beta answers your reports. Each one below came with the logs or the steps that pinned the fault down.

Reporter What they found

Kythros
@Kythros
GameCube texture packs never showed (#5), with the exact line in Dolphin that gave them no memory.

dann1k
@dann1k
The PSP core crashed when its resolution changed in the Quick Menu (#63), with a trace that led straight to it.

lomgth
@lomgth
Renames that did not stick, games that could not be removed, and a RetroAchievements password that seemed lost (#55, #57, #58).

Nek
@nekwebdev
The WebUI's Update button never lit up (#69): releases lacked the checksum file the updater needs.

Your games over the network. Frame generation without the doubled picture.

At a glance

What's new What it brings

SMB
Play games straight from a shared folder on your PC, chosen in the WebUI.

Frame Generation
No more doubled picture: the frames made in between now match the real ones.

Your library
Rename a game everywhere at once, and delete one from the WebUI.

Fixes
Texture packs for GameCube, PSP resolution changes, the WebUI's Update button.

SMB. Your games, from your PC.

Keep your backups on your PC and play them on the PS5 without copying them over. RetroArch's file browser, Load Content included, has a new SMB entry after INTERNAL and EXTERNAL.

  1. Share a folder on your PC (Windows file sharing, or Samba on Linux and macOS).
  2. Open SMB in the WebUI and enter your PC's name or address under Server, with your user name and password (leave the user name empty to sign in as a guest).
  3. Choose Test connection, then the Share and the Folder that holds your games, and Save.
  4. In RetroArch, open Load Content → SMB and start a game.
  • Most cores read the game straight from the share. A core that opens files by itself gets a copy on the console first, removed when the game closes.
  • Your password stays on your PS5. The WebUI never shows it back to you, and it is sent only to your PC.
  • Read-only. Nothing on your share is changed.

SMB support is inspired by itsPLK's PS5 Package Manager and uses the same libsmb2 revision.

Frame Generation without the doubled picture

  • The frames made in between now match the real ones. The GameCube core reported a smaller picture than it hands over, so every generated frame was a zoomed part of the real one. On screen the two alternated, which looked like a doubled image.
  • A game below full speed shows its real frames again. When a core fell behind, Frame Generation could show only frames made in between, never the game's own.
  • Checked on every core. Each core ran with Frame Generation on while every picture sent to the display was recorded and compared, generated with real. The results are below.

Your library

  • A rename reaches every list. A name you edit in the WebUI's Games page now shows in RetroArch's playlists (XMB and RGUI) and in EmulationStation, every time you change it.
  • Delete game. The Files tab of a game in the WebUI deletes it from your PS5: the file, the track files its disc names, and its place in RetroArch and EmulationStation. Your saves and savestates are kept. When two copies share a name, the box art and details stay with the copy you keep.
  • RetroAchievements shows you as signed in. After you sign in, RetroArch keeps a sign-in token instead of your password; the WebUI now shows it as saved instead of "Not set".

Fixes

  • GameCube texture packs work. Dolphin's custom texture cache had no memory on the PS5; it now has 512 MiB. Turn on Load Custom Textures in the Dolphin core options.
  • PSP: changing Internal Resolution in the Quick Menu no longer closes RetroArch.
  • The WebUI's Update button works. Every release now carries the checksum file the updater checks; v3.0.0-beta-3 has it too.

Played on a Base PS5

What How it went
SMB A share on a PC listed and saved in the WebUI, as a guest and with a password; a game on it started from Load Content > SMB.
Frame Generation All 35 cores tried, every picture sent to the display recorded. In 32, the generated frames sit between their real neighbours and the real frames are shown. DOSBox Pure at 70 Hz and ScummVM at 120 Hz correctly make none. NeoCD was not tried: no disc.
GameCube With a texture pack and Load Custom Textures on: no memory error, nothing unloaded, full speed.
PSP Internal Resolution raised from 6x to 8x during play, as the Quick Menu does: the game carried on at the new size.
Your library A game added from the WebUI, renamed (its playlist name followed), then deleted with its files and details.

Upgrading from v3.0.0-beta-3

  1. Back up your existing title folder, especially configuration, saves, states, system files, content and any custom media.
  2. Use the WebUI's Update button, or merge the complete PPSA99169 folder from the package into your installation, keeping your own files and configuration.
  3. Fully close and reopen PS5 RetroArch.

No games, BIOS files, console firmware, or decryption keys are supplied. Use only legally obtained backups of games you own and system files dumped from hardware you own.

Source, licences, and credits

Changes since v3.0.0-beta-3. Release source; component source links and exact revisions are included in licenses/components.json. libsmb2 is built from its own repository at a pinned revision, under the LGPL-2.1-or-later.

Snes9x, FinalBurn Neo, Genesis Plus GX, PicoDrive, Opera, and the Alekfull NX theme carry non-commercial restrictions. This distribution may not be sold, and this release carries no donation link. The package's licenses/ directory records component licences and exact source revisions. RPCS3 is not included.

Thank you to itsPLK for PS5 Package Manager, whose SMB client showed the way; to Ronnie Sahlberg and the libsmb2 contributors; to everyone who reported a problem with the logs to find it; and to the RetroArch/libretro community, emulator and ES-DE developers, and the PS5 homebrew scene. Icons: Microsoft Fluent UI System Icons (MIT); system artwork: the Linear ES-DE theme.
