PS5_MihawkOS-v8.2.0-alpha-8

MihawkOS is a passion project, not a piracy project.

It exists so you can play the games you own on the console you own.

  • Piracy is not condoned.
  • No games, saves, keys, firmware or exploits are included, and they never will be.
  • Use only games and programs you have the right to run: your own copies, bought or installed by you.
  • Requests for, or links to, games, keys, firmware or exploits are not welcome in this project's issues or discussions.

A new look for the desktop: Settings, dialogs and text as they were designed, and every shortcut with its own icon.

A point release of Alpha 8, all about the MihawkOS desktop. It is still experimental. MihawkOS offers this update by
itself
from Alpha 8.1, Alpha 8 and 7.1.

What's new
⚙️ A new Settings: Home, Personalization and Display as designed, with a wallpaper picker
🔤 Smoother text: softer, cleaner letters everywhere on the desktop
🖼️ The right icon on every shortcut: no more Wine icons on your desktop
🪟 Dialogs, colours and windows: light dialogs, your theme's accent colour, calmer inactive windows
🔗 Create shortcut works: from File Explorer and the desktop, plus Pin to Start
🔑 Steam sign-in fixed: a new Steam install no longer stays on "Steam is updating itself"

A new Settings

  • Home, Personalization and System > Display are redrawn as the design draws them.
  • Pick your wallpaper in Personalization: Bubble City by Skeuoss, MihawkOS's own Bubble Earth, Glass City and Aqua
World, and the theme wallpapers. The desktop changes as soon as you pick one.
  • Quick Settings is drawn as designed too.

Smoother text

Letters are now drawn with 256 shades of grey instead of 17, with light hinting, so their edges are smooth on a TV.
No colour fringes.

The right icon on every shortcut

Every desktop shortcut now shows its own icon: the one the shortcut names, or else its program's own, found inside your
MihawkOS setup. Store shortcuts and launchers that used to show Wine's icon now show theirs. On the test console, 31 of
31 shortcuts show the right icon, for 64-bit and 32-bit programs alike.

Dialogs, colours and windows

  • Message boxes and task dialogs stay light in the dark theme, as designed, and use the desktop's own font. Programs
that asked for the Segoe UI font used to get a serif one.
  • Your theme's accent colour is used in Settings, Start, the calendar, File Explorer and the taskbar.
  • Inactive windows get a calm, solid title bar, as in the design.
  • MihawkOS, not Windows: the desktop's prompts and messages say MihawkOS.

Create shortcut works

  • Create shortcut and Pin to Start work from File Explorer and from the desktop's menu. The old Create link
item that did nothing is gone.
  • A new shortcut appears on the desktop within about a tenth of a second, and a deleted one is gone within half a second.
  • A Start pin no longer shows up as a phantom icon on the desktop.

Steam sign-in fixed

In 8.1, a new Steam install could stay on Steam is updating itself for ten minutes and then ask to try again, every
time (issue #62). Steam had finished; MihawkOS just never noticed
that Steam's browser had started, because since 8.1 that browser runs inside MihawkOS. It now notices: on the test
console the phone and QR screen came up about 4½ minutes after Steam's install, with Steam's browser still inside
MihawkOS. Thanks to Portablelle for finding the cause and proposing the fix.

If you used the steam-browser-optout workaround from the issue, you can delete that folder.

Known issues

  • Small leftovers in the new look: a faint grey "No" can show inside a message box's Cancel button after it moves,
Quick Settings' "on" tiles keep the default blue, and the task dialog's layout is still the old one.
  • A brief black frame when MihawkOS switches between Big Picture and the game.
  • Big Picture can still hitch now and then while pages load.
  • Not fixed yet on the controller: camera drift, the Create button, the touchpad as a mouse, the Steam Input cursor,
and input lag. Some games, such as The Binding of Isaac, can map the controller oddly.
  • Restart the PS5 now and then. Pipe memory runs out after very many program starts; MihawkOS says Restart the
    PS5
    when that happens.
  • The per-boot setup is yours: your payloads after every cold boot. Never use rest mode with payloads loaded.
  • Not supported: DRM such as Denuvo, and anti-cheat such as Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye.

Everything else from Alpha 8.1 and
Alpha 8 still applies.

From Alpha 8.1, Alpha 8 or 7.1: open MihawkOS from the home screen. It finds 8.2, downloads it, checks its signature
and installs it when you restart it.

From Alpha 7: replace the PPSA99170 folder in /data/homebrew/ with the new one and open MihawkOS: it installs
the new runtime by itself.

New install, or from Alpha 6: follow Alpha 7's steps
with this release's zip. Back up your saves first when updating.

Your setup, your games in C:\Games, Steam and your settings are kept.

No games, saves, keys or firmware are supplied. Use only games and programs you have the right to run.
