PS5_MihawkOS-v8.1.0-alpha-8
MihawkOS is a passion project, not a piracy project.
It exists so you can play the games you own on the console you own.
- Piracy is not condoned.
- No games, saves, keys, firmware or exploits are included, and they never will be.
- Use only games and programs you have the right to run: your own copies, bought or installed by you.
- Requests for, or links to, games, keys, firmware or exploits are not welcome in this project's issues or discussions.
Steam's browser inside MihawkOS. Your game gets the whole console. Cloud saves finish before Steam closes.
A point release of Alpha 8, all about Steam. It is still experimental. MihawkOS offers this update by itself from
7.1 and Alpha 8.
| What's new | |
|---|---|
| ๐ | Steam's browser runs inside MihawkOS: Big Picture's pages use far less of the console |
| ๐ | Your game comes first: Steam steps aside when you press Play, and comes back when you quit |
| โ๏ธ | Cloud saves you can trust: Steam finishes its Steam Cloud upload before it closes |
| โจ | New handover screens: "Getting your game ready" and "Welcome back", on the game's own artwork |
Steam's browser runs inside MihawkOS
Big Picture's store, library and sign-in pages are drawn by Steam's built-in browser. In Alpha 8 it ran as a separate
program beside MihawkOS; now it runs inside it.
- Far lighter on the console: about 710 of the console's page tables in ten minutes of browsing, against about 1,870
before (base PS5, firmware 13.60). - Pages scroll at about 120 fps.
Your game comes first
When you press Play on a game in Big Picture, Steam now steps aside so the game gets all the room on the console:
- MihawkOS shows Getting ready and asks Steam to close. Steam saves its session and closes by itself.
- The game starts with Steam running quietly behind it, and nothing else.
- When you quit the game, MihawkOS shows Welcome back, Steam saves to Steam Cloud and closes, and Big Picture opens
again where you left it.
Measured on a base PS5 with the Resident Evil 3: Raccoon City demo: about 6,200 page tables free during play, against
about 5,300 in Alpha 8, at 110 to 120 fps.
This handover is for 64-bit games. A 32-bit game started from Big Picture runs as it did in Alpha 8: beside Steam,
with no handover screens, and Steam syncs its cloud saves as usual when it ends. 32-bit games join the handover in a
later update.
The Failed to start process for this game: General failure (0x1F) pop-up that could flash when you pressed Play is
gone. If Steam ever stops responding during a handover, MihawkOS asks whether to keep waiting (โ) or close Steam (โณ).
Cloud saves you can trust
When a game ends, MihawkOS now waits until Steam has seen it end. Steam does its Steam Cloud upload first, and only then
is it asked to close. On the console, Steam's own log shows the upload completing two seconds before Steam closed.
New handover screens
- Getting ready and Welcome back, each with a short checklist that ticks off what has really happened:
Steam saving its session, room being made for the game, the game starting, the Cloud save, Big Picture reopening. - Drawn in frosted glass over the game's own Steam artwork, read from Steam's library on the console. Games without
artwork get the Aero sky. - In all 10 languages.
- The screen stays up until the game's first frames take over, in one step, without flicker.
Also fixed
- Settings shows release names. The update check reads Alpha 8.1 and Alpha 8 instead of a raw number
such as01.003.000, which could appear cut off as "1....". - Every Windows setup gets the new built-in files when MihawkOS updates. Until now, a setup made by an older
release could keep a few of its old Windows modules after an update; it now refreshes all of them.
Known issues
- A brief black frame when MihawkOS switches between Big Picture and the game. It is next on the list.
- Big Picture can still hitch now and then while pages load. Smoothing it out comes after 8.1.
- Not fixed yet on the controller: camera drift, the Create button, the touchpad as a mouse, the Steam Input cursor,
and input lag. Some games, such as The Binding of Isaac, can map the controller oddly; this is being looked at. - Restart the PS5 now and then. Pipe memory runs out after very many program starts; MihawkOS says Restart the
PS5 when that happens. - The per-boot setup is yours: your payloads after every cold boot. Never use rest mode with payloads loaded.
- Not supported: DRM such as Denuvo, and anti-cheat such as Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye.
Everything else from Alpha 8 still applies.

From Alpha 8 or 7.1: open MihawkOS from the home screen. It finds 8.1, downloads it, checks its signature and
installs it when you restart it.
From Alpha 7: replace the PPSA99170 folder in /data/homebrew/ with the new one and open MihawkOS: it installs
the new runtime by itself.
New install, or from Alpha 6: follow Alpha 7's steps
with this release's zip. Back up your saves first when updating.
Your setup, your games in C:\Games, Steam and your settings are kept.
No games, saves, keys or firmware are supplied. Use only games and programs you have the right to run.
