Release Notes
What's new in this release
This release focuses on stability, speed, and a smarter reading engine, with a reinforced fallback system so your books always open — even the heavy ones.
📚 Reading engine & reliability
The reading engine has been fully refreshed with a faster, more robust core, along with a safety net that keeps difficult books readable:
- New reading engine — a faster, more efficient parser and layout engine that handles large EPUBs more smoothly and uses memory more carefully.
- Smarter fail-safe opening — if a chapter won't build with the normal quality settings, the reader now automatically falls back through lighter modes, ending in a text-only Safe Mode. Your chapter still opens as text instead of showing an error.
- Memory-aware rebuild protection — large chapters no longer crash the device when memory gets tight; the reader backs off gracefully instead.
- Per-book render memory — the reader now remembers which quality level successfully opened each book, so reopening a difficult book no longer re-runs the whole slow trial-and-error chain. A book that needed Safe Mode opens directly from its saved state next time.
⚡ Speed & performance
- Boot is faster and cleaner: book and stats data is now read directly from the SD card in a streaming way, avoiding a large temporary memory spike and leaving more free memory after startup.
- Slower, less-fragmented indexing — repeated images (chapter ornaments, dividers) are now recognized once and reused, and SD-font data grows in place. This keeps memory healthy through long chapters.
- Reading stats are lighter: the device no longer keeps a duplicate stats system, freeing flash and speeding up start.
- Hyphenation dictionaries for several languages are now optional, reducing flash usage so the default build has more headroom.
📱 Reading experience
- Per-book reader settings — font choices, margins, spacing, and alignment are now saved per book, so each book opens exactly the way you left it.
- Clearer indexing messages — when a book falls back to a lighter mode, you now see which mode is running instead of a generic "Indexing…".
- Snappier dictionary word lookup — moving through words in the dictionary no longer re-renders the whole page, making word selection noticeably faster.
- Fixes — bookmark/highlight selection, dictionary rendering, home-screen stats refresh, and long-press handling all received polish.
🌙 Screensaver & sleep
- Screensaver crashes fixed — the screensaver no longer runs out of memory and reboots when waking up or showing text overlays.
- Shuffle & sequential order fixed — the screensaver and sleep screen now correctly honor your ordering choice from the very first image, instead of always starting on the same one.
