v2.16.2 (sd2snes v1.11.2)

Important

Coming from 2.15 or earlier? Read the 2.16 notes first: the card layout changed, and the Web Manager has to Organize the card once. Coming from 2.16 there is nothing to reorganise.

What's New

MSU-1 game folders behave like the game

An MSU-1 game usually sits in a folder with its ROM, the .msu and dozens of .pcm tracks. The browser now treats that folder as the game:

  • A on the folder opens the game: the info card or the boot, whichever you have set. This only happens when the folder holds a single ROM with a matching .msu. Folders with two or more ROMs open as usual. B on the info card takes you back to the list with the folder highlighted, and Reset to menu also lands on the folder instead of inside it. It is on by default: Browser Settings → Open MSU-1 folders as games. Turn it off if you want to browse inside the folder, for example to play a .pcm track in the player.
  • The folder shows the game's cover while it is highlighted.
  • Tracks are listed last, in track order (-2 before -10), so the ROM stays at the top.

Browse the sd2snes folder

New option Browser Settings → Show sd2snes folder, off by default. Turn it on and /sd2snes appears in the file list like any other folder, so a theme, a menu track or one of the sound effects can be picked straight from the browser instead of through the Web Manager. The list updates the moment you leave the settings, and turning the option off hides the folder again.

Inside it you only see what the browser can open: themes, .spc, .pcm and ROMs. That is why the asset folders (info, cheats, patches) look empty even when they are full.

Deleting a game cleans up after it

Deleting a ROM from the browser, from Recents or from Favorites now also deletes what belonged to that game: the box art next to the ROM, everything under /sd2snes/info (info screen, screenshot, clip and up to eight guides), its cheat file and its patch settings. No more orphans left behind on the card.

Your saves are not touched: battery saves, memory packs and savestates stay where they are, and Delete save is still its own action in the context menu. Deleting a theme, an .spc or a .pcm never touches a game's files either, even when the names match.

Fixes

  • Menu stability on S-CPU version 1 consoles (Mk.II and FXPak Pro/Mk.III): on the early consoles whose APU sits on a separate board, the menu could crash, freeze or show graphical glitches, while the diagnostic firmware and the Burn-In Test reported the machine as perfectly healthy.

This one is a bug in the console's silicon, not a defect in your unit and not something a cartridge can repair. The first S-CPU revision can lock up when a DMA transfer ends just as HDMA is about to run, a window every later revision survives. What this release changes is that the menu stops walking into it, so this is a workaround, not a cure.

For the curious: the menu's NMI uploads 5.7 KB of tiles by DMA, which takes the whole VBlank (lines 225 to 261). After each cover upload the menu re-enabled the NMI while still in VBlank, which raised a late NMI, and that upload ran up to 30 lines into the visible picture with HDMA enabled, ending among the per-line HDMA transfers, which is exactly the pattern this CPU revision dislikes. Now an NMI that does not enter on line 225 skips the upload and the next frame sends it, and the long transfers (WRAM backup, font rebuild, patched-ROM export) run with HDMA disabled. Nothing changes on any other console.

Also in 2.16.1

2.16.1 was out for less than a day, so here is what it carried, in case you are coming straight from 2.16:

  • The clock writes the date your way. The menu clock used to show the date year first in every language. It now follows the menu language, with the time after it: DD/MM/YYYY for Português, Español, Français and Italiano, DD.MM.YYYY for Deutsch and Русский, MM/DD/YYYY for English. Set Clock walks the fields in the same order they are shown.
  • The uppercase Y was redrawn. Its stem changed width and side on every row and read like a different letter; it now tapers into a straight, centred stem.
  • The Russian У got a drawing of its own, with the tail, instead of borrowing the Latin Y, and the Russian menu got another round of wording fixes.
  • NES (FXPak Pro/Mk.III): fixed a 2.16 regression that broke the graphics in some games, like Super Mario Bros.

Tip

Thanks to @maniaco007 for starting the date work and for that new Y (#50).
