HelixSR 3.3.0

HelixSR 3.3.0. Download HelixSR Desktop below (Windows .exe, Linux / Steam Deck .AppImage or .deb) and let it set
HelixSR up, or use HelixSR-3.3.0.zip with its setup scripts. HelixSR Scaler 2.3.0 is included (its own download:
HelixSR Scaler releases).

The setup now also builds HLX DLSS's Vulkan kernels, so the first setup takes longer than before; later releases reuse what it built.

New in 3.3.0

  • HLX FSR 4 Full on more GPUs. On the BC-250 and RDNA 1 (RX 5000) it now also runs on Windows, with its fast kernels as
DirectX 12 shaders. On RDNA 2 (RX 6000), RDNA 3 (RX 7000) and the Steam Deck it runs AMD's INT8 network with faster forms of
AMD's shaders that give the same picture, on Windows and Linux. Tested on a BC-250 under Linux only; Windows and RX 6000 / 7000 /
    Steam Deck are untested.
  • HLX FSR 4 Full on a BC-250: its network kernels are about 2.5% faster, with the same picture. A game whose output is
R10G10B10A2 no longer gets a black image. Its files are now about half the size.
  • HLX DLSS runs natively in Vulkan games instead of through HelixSR Scaler's DirectX 12 bridge (which copied every input
over and the output back). The setup now also builds its Vulkan kernels, so it takes longer. If they are missing, Vulkan games
use the bridge as before. Tested with a replay on a BC-250 under Linux (same picture as the bridge); not yet in a real game.
  • HLX FSR 4 in Vulkan games: HelixSR Scaler lists it as an upscaler in Vulkan games too (OptiScaler/custom/HLX FSR 4/ffx_vk).
  • Preset K on Windows: all of its layers now run as DirectX 12 shaders (the deepest one was much slower before). New setting
[Upscaling] Int8 = auto | on | off in HelixSR/k/helixsr.ini: auto (default) uses 8-bit math in its outer layers on GPUs
with fast 8-bit dot products (AMD RDNA 2 and newer, NVIDIA RTX and GTX 16, Intel Arc) and keeps 16-bit math on the BC-250 and
RDNA 1. Windows and the 8-bit path are untested on real hardware.
  • NVIDIA GTX 10 under Linux: HLX DLSS and HLX FSR 4 now take their 32-bit paths there too, as on Windows. Under Proton the
driver reports 16-bit math that GTX 10 cards run at a small fraction of the speed, so both were much slower than on Windows.
  • NVIDIA GTX 10: HLX DLSS's faster Quality output kernel now runs down to scale 1.47 instead of 1.49 (above 720p to 1080p it
used a much slower one), with the same picture.
  • HelixSR Scaler 2.3.0: HLX FSR 4 Full on Windows and the Steam Deck, Vulkan games.

Known issues in 3.3.0

  • A game can freeze at startup with Preset K when the Steam overlay is on. Turn the overlay off for that game (Properties, General) if it does.
  • Preset K with DeepReuse 1:2 or 1:4: one GPU hang on a BC-250 at 1440p with 1:2, cause not found. Exact, the default, is the safe choice.
  • HLX FSR 4 Full with 1:2 or 1:4: some ghosting in motion, more at 1:4. Exact, the default, has none.
  • Preset K can sparkle on foliage at any DeepReuse. HLX FSR 4 Full and Model E are steadier there.

Tested on an AMD BC-250 under Linux. Windows, RX 6000 / 7000, the Steam Deck and NVIDIA GTX are not tested by us: reports with
helixsr.log / OptiScaler.log, or HelixSR Desktop's speed test results, are very welcome.
