What’s new in 1.4.2
- MK64 items — experimental: shells, bananas, mushrooms, Lightning, Star, Boo and more on imported tracks. A saved race option enables them; item cycling shares the weapon HUD. These items are still being tested, including the latest cycling, collision and Lightning visuals.
- Rival engine audio: hear nearby AI and other players with stereo positioning and distance falloff. Adjust Rival Engine Volume in Audio.
- Big Game Insanity bonus chapter: keep the original ending, then continue into optional, replayable bonus races with saved progress. Fixes the invalid post-campaign purchase/Join transition.
- Online corrections: connected-player movement correction, remote sound ownership, highlight characters and post-race synchronization. Online remains experimental; all peers need 1.4.2 (protocol 65).
- Cleanup: organized the new modules, removed an unused HUD path and added contributor notes. Achievement images and existing launcher artwork are unchanged.
Downloads
Windows, experimental native Linux and matching source are below. The optional Remastered Edition texture mod is a separate download, credited to Crisaty (Cristian A.T.); install its RTZ through Settings > Mods.
No ROMs or extracted gameplay maps, textures, previews or audio are included in the main downloads. Provide your own Road Rash 64 ROM, plus your own Mario Kart 64 ROM for importing tracks/items. Existing c40 imports work; older packs need reimporting for items. The authorized achievement/launcher imagery and translated native code remain included.
Both platforms passed offline regression and settings-persistence checks. The newest item/Lightning changes still need live visual testing; Linux, online, bonus-campaign and imported-map coverage remain limited. No Steam Deck hitching fix is claimed. Draw Distance: 50–60% is a good starting point—100% can load the entire original map and is especially demanding in split screen.
